The Long Barn brings a former agricultural building back into use, adding a permanent setting for ceremonies, dinners and late-night celebrations while still feeling closely tied to the building it once was. For a venue already designed for two-night exclusive use and relaxed country-house weddings, it feels like a natural next step. Let’s take a look…
Broadfield sits just outside the village of Bodenham, a short drive from Hereford, within a thousand-acre farm and some of the county’s loveliest countryside. The house dates back to the 14th century, beginning life as a priory before later becoming a farmhouse, and was renovated in 2018 to become the exclusive-use wedding venue we all know and love today.
The appeal here is as much about time as it is about the setting. Broadfield is hired for two nights and three days as standard, giving couples the chance to arrive the day before with their nearest and dearest, settle into the house, and wake up the next morning with the celebrations still ahead.
The main house sleeps up to 24 guests across nine bedrooms, including a wood-panelled wedding suite with its own bathroom and dressing room. The nearby Coach House adds space for another six or seven guests, with further accommodation available on the surrounding farm and in nearby villages.
The Long Barn sits beside the beech-lined courtyard at the front of the house, placing it neatly within Broadfield’s existing layout. Guests can move seamlessly between the house, gardens, courtyard, bar and barn, with a new entrance making that connection even stronger.
The renovation has been handled sensitively, with original materials repurposed wherever possible. Stone and brick removed during the work have been cleaned and reused, while a salvaged timber lintel now sits above the bar, and the ceiling has been kept in a warm, natural plaster tone rather than painted white, giving the room a softer backdrop for florals and lighting.
The former tack room has become the bar, tucked away from the main space, while one of the old stable bays has been reworked into guest loos with the original ironwork still in place. These may sound like small details, but they say quite a lot about the way the building and the project as a whole have been approached.
For ceremonies, one of the new glazed doors serves as a natural entrance, allowing couples to walk the length of the barn. For dinner, the space can be arranged with long tables or round tables, and later, with the bar open, it becomes a permanent party space offering character in spades.
With the Long Barn now open, Broadfield has more room for the wedding day to unfold across the entire estate. Couples might marry in the barn, return there for dinner, and keep the party going there after dark, or use it alongside the house, gardens, and existing reception spaces.
Outdoor ceremonies can still take place in the gardens, with options including the rose garden, woodland, the apple orchard, and the south-facing lawns. Inside the house, the wood-panelled dining room seats up to 60, while the inner hall is perfect for smaller ceremonies of up to 50. The Fold Yard marquee is still available, and couples can still bring in a tipi or marquee for larger celebrations on the grounds if they wish.
The beauty of Broadfield is that couples have access to a generous range of options without making the estate feel over-complicated. You’re free to keep things intimate in the house, spill into the gardens, design the day around the Long Barn, or simply move between several (equally gorgeous) spaces as the day evolves.
Food and drink follow the same relaxed approach. Couples can choose their own caterer, with the use of the professional catering kitchen included, or work with one of Broadfield’s recommended local suppliers. That might mean a formal dinner, a wood-fired feast, street food, sharing platters, paella or a Herefordshire hog roast.
Drinks can be arranged through the venue’s own list of wines and spirits, or couples can bring their own with corkage applied. Heads-up: Broadfield also produces its own Herefordshire-grown sparkling wine, cider and apple juice. You are in apple country, after all!
This beautiful new addition gives Broadfield something permanent, characterful and practical at the centre of the wedding day. It also broadens what the estate can offer while keeping the house, gardens and two-night stay at the heart of the experience. Couples now have a newly renovated barn for ceremonies, dinners and dancing, with old stone, dreamy light and plenty of space for the party of a lifetime, making a wedding at Broadfield even more compelling.
