Inside Cornwell Manor: A Celebration of English Hospitality with Nyetimber x Ross & Ross

Inside Cornwell Manor: A Celebration of English Hospitality with Nyetimber x Ross & Ross

Arriving in the middle of a hailstorm isn’t exactly the dream start to a countryside escape, but somehow stepping inside Cornwell Manor felt like an instant reset. Warm and inviting, the weather quickly became part of the charm. Of course, the glass of Nyetimber offered on arrival helped things greatly.

Invited by Charlotte, Events Director extraordinaire, I’d joined for an intimate lunch at Cornwell Manor in partnership with Nyetimber – one of England’s most celebrated sparkling wine houses. With Ross & Ross curating the menu, it promised to be a thoughtful coming together of food, wine and setting.

A storybook Venue in the cotswolds

Driving through the rolling Cotswold countryside, past honey-stone villages, sheep-dotted fields and verges frothing with cow parsley, there’s an immediate sense of joy to the journey. But it’s the moment you turn into the driveway of Cornwell Manor that really changes things.

Often described as one of the prettiest houses in England (and it’s hard to argue otherwise), Cornwell Manor sits within an expansive 2,000-acre estate, straddling the Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire borders. The setting is every bit as romantic as you’d hope; formal gardens with sculpted topiary (yes, that topiary, made famous by The Holiday—IYKYK), a grand fountain and reflecting pool, and far-reaching views across lakes, woodland and open countryside.

The house itself manages that elusive balance between grandeur and warmth. And then there’s the space – croquet lawns and terraces made for long, lingering drinks receptions, a wildflower meadow leading to a ballroom, and endless possibilities for a countryside marquee celebration.

What makes Cornwell Manor particularly special for weddings is its flexibility. Garden ceremonies by the fountain, with the house as your backdrop, feel like the natural choice on good-weather days, while the walled garden or a beautifully styled stretch tent offer equally beautiful alternatives.

And when the British weather inevitably has other ideas, the ballroom provides an elegant indoor option without losing any of the atmosphere.

With accommodation for up to 24 guests in the main house, and an additional two-bedroom cottage in the village, it lends itself to a full wedding weekend or multi-day celebration.

The Ballroom as the Ultimate Plan B

As I mentioned, the spring weather wasn’t exactly playing ball. While the idea of lunch out in those bucolic grounds had its appeal, I had a feeling the Plan B Charlotte and Kerry Poulter had in mind would be just as special.

Because let’s be honest—Plan Bs don’t always get the best reputation. But this room? Not even close to a compromise. The Ballroom at Cornwell Manor is flooded with natural light, thanks to its large Georgian-scale windows, yet still feels calm, intimate and atmospheric. It’s a space that works beautifully for everything from ceremonies to relaxed pre- or post-wedding dining.

With capacity for up to 100 for a ceremony or 72 for dining, a minstrels’ gallery overlooks the space, ideal for live music or a DJ, and it’s easy to imagine the room evolving throughout the day, from a refined wedding breakfast to a lively evening celebration.

Originally designed by Clough Williams-Ellis in the late 1930s, the Ballroom brings a slightly unexpected layer to Cornwell Manor’s story. And with its own adjoining walled garden, perfect for extending celebrations with a marquee, it’s a Plan B that, in reality, might just steal the show.

Ross & Ross x Nyetimber Pairing

Of course, no wedding venue experience would be complete without talking about the food. And if there’s one thing this lunch demonstrated beautifully, it’s the impact of a thoughtfully curated food-and-wine pairing.

For over 35 years, Nyetimber has been making English sparkling wines that rival the very best in the world, and the afternoon offered a wonderful opportunity to experience just how versatile those wines can be throughout a wedding menu, rather than simply serving sparkling wine for the toast.

Working with the finest seasonal produce from the British Isles, Ross & Ross created a menu that allowed the wines to “sing”—a phrase Helen from Nyetimber returned to throughout the afternoon. From Cornish crab and lobster canapés paired with Nyetimber’s Classic Cuvee to a beautifully executed turbot course served alongside the prestigious 1086 by Nyetimber Cuvee, each pairing was perfectly balanced. The guinea fowl and Nyetimber Rosé Multi-Vintage proved another highlight, while a delicate raspberry and vanilla mille-feuille was paired with Cuvee Chérie Multi-Vintage, whose honeyed notes and bright citrus character provided the perfect finale to the meal.

An afternoon of English countryside charm at its very best! My thanks to Cornwell Manor, Nyetimber and Ross & Ross for such a memorable and delicious day.

With thanks to
