Trends… Whether you follow them or not, they happen all the same.

Some people like to avoid the whole wedding trends discussion, wanting to bring us right back to how it should reflect the couple, be about the love between two people and sharing the day with friends and family. This is all absolutely correct and I wholeheartedly agree with each and every one of these sentiments.

However, if like me, you feel all of the above and more but also love to gaze at the new emerging interior trends, the latest colours and shapes hitting the high-street and have a wish list of current coveted pieces as long as your arm, then this feature is most probably for you.

As well as taking a peek at some pretty darn gorgeous wedding inspiration it covers so much more, encouraging you to find your style by thinking outside of that wedding-box.

To help guide you through 2015, Katrina Otter Weddings & Events is back on Coco.

The Wedding Trend Report

Katrina: Over the past couple of years we have been fortunate to see some very dominate trends emerge – mismatched bridesmaid dresses, floral crowns, naked cakes, art deco and rustic chic to name a few. However this year has been an exception, which makes the task of predicting wedding trends for 2015 rather more difficult.

So in addition to looking at emerging trends from wedding catwalks, real weddings and inspiration shoots I’ve also decided to look further afield at dominant and emerging trends in the world of fashion, design, architecture and interiors.

Shall we begin…?

Shades of Blue

Blue (dark, light and everything in between) was one of the dominant 2014 runway trends this fall. Emporio Armani and Richard Nicoll both played on blue in its many permutations – from electric, cyan and cobalt to navy, sapphire and ice blue.

For weddings this is an easy trend to emulate as it is more versatile and less dictatorial than many other colour combinations, can work with almost any backdrop and depending on the combinations can be either bold and playful or demure and elegant.

BRIGHT AND BOLD

The second I saw the hot pink and bright orange Coco Colour Palette I knew this was going to be one HOT trend for 2015, or at least I really really want it to be!

This utterly divine and edgy palette of hot neon pinks and warm oranges, underlined with crisp whites will certainly make your Big Day stand out and have your guests talking about your wedding for all the right reasons.

Throw in some geometrics and you have one modern, alternative and bang on trend wedding.

Bohemian Beats

In 2013 / 2014 Art Deco and Vintage Glamour was HUGE.

For 2015 it’s all about the jarring juxtapositions and jaw-droppingly gorgeous bohemian vibe of the late 60’s / early 70’s.

Think rich colours, soft suedes and silks, an abundance of lace, clashing prints and patterns, hand-crafted touches, wild flowers, festoon lights and the essential ingredient – an element of the outdoors.

  • New colours i.e. blues, greys and even a hint of mint!

LIGHTING

Of all the décor options, a well thought out and imaginative lighting design is ultimate way to set the tone for your wedding.

With couples allocating more of their budget to this design element expect to see increasingly creative and unique lighting designs with the use of festoon lighting, Edison bulbs, gobos, video mapping, chandeliers and an abundance of candles.

COPPER & CONCRETE

Copper and concrete are currently two of the most talked about interior trends. Pick up any interior design magazine and you will notice time and time again these two elements are being used as a key feature or design detail. When it comes to this trend crossing over to the wedding industry this is where creativity and your imagination steps in!

If you are fortunate enough to have the perfect industrially chic wedding venue with vast amounts of exposed concrete surfaces and copper pipes then you’ve pretty much nailed the trend already! If you’re looking for a subtler way to add these earthy elements to your wedding then how about using copper and concrete as a base colour palette or on a design front think DIY candles, copper cutlery and copper foil invitations.

WATERCOLOUR

This year the growing popularity of watercolour really has grabbed the attention of the wedding industry and inspired a whole host of creative DIY blog posts on how to emulate this trend. After all who could fail to be entranced by these soft tones and gorgeous hues…?

From watercolour invitations to soft-washed cakes and dipped napkins, there’s no denying that there are plenty of creative ways to incorporate this trend into your wedding day.

MINiMALISTIC

Minimalist weddings are officially back!

Not only has minimalism been a huge trend on the bridal catwalk it’s also increasingly been a trend in bridal hair and make-up, design and décor. On the runway this came in the form of pared down silhouettes, sheaths and slip dress in pure, luxe fabrics. When it comes to hair and make-up think matte skin, flushed cheeks, soft peachy pink lips and sleek hair.

And finally décor and details… Less is definitely more with this trend! Neutral and earthy tones, wooden furniture, natural fabrics and lashing of foliage will create the perfect minimalistic and ultra-romantic setting.

FAUX

Floral garlands are one way to add the real WOW factor to your wedding. They can be used to create everything from statement tablescapes and ceremony backdrops to detailed defined cake tables, bars and DJ booths.

If you’ve fallen in love with floral garlands but don’t necessarily have the budget or are marrying out of season then Friend of Faux is your new best friend!

With blooms such as lilac, roses, plump peonies lots of velvety eucalyptus and wild hedgerow touches for half the price of the real deal it’s easy to understand the industry buzz surrounding them and why we’re all friends of Faux.

POLKA DOTS

Sophisticated polka dots are literally everywhere on Pinterest at the moment. From playful tulle prints to feminine and subtle Swiss dots, polka dots are most definitely a fresh idea to consider

The best thing about this trend is that it can be incorporated into almost any element of your wedding from wedding dresses and veils, to tablescapes, stationery, cakes… You get the drift!

Although try not to go over-board with this one and stick to one or two key elements only – polka dots can quickly go from being sophisticated and stylish to over-the-top.

WILD GARDEN

Throughout 2014 the ‘just-picked-from-the-garden’ look for floral arrangements and bridal bouquets was an increasingly popular trend. The great news is that it’s here to stay!

Using freshly picked flowers will remain a huge trend, as well as incorporating seasonal elements in the arrangements themselves.

So there you have it… Katrina’s 2015 wedding trend predictions.

I’m personally loving the whole minimalistic look, almost Scandi in vibe. Also, yes to Watercolour! Obvs. Oh and I’ll always be a sucker for that wild garden bouquet. Bigger the better if you ask me.

This is without doubt some of the best inspiration from around the world, so if you see something you love then you’ll find all of the links below. From the Photographer right through to the original article and suppliers.

If you want to set your own trends then Kat’s advice would be to look outside the wedding industry. Think about what inspires and interests you (whether this be food, fashion, theatre, interiors and so on), and use this as the basis for your wedding. Get creative, break the mould and above all have fun!

If you are looking for any further wedding planning ideas, inspiration or advice then you probably want to say hello to Katrina, go on, she’d love to hear from you!

Lot of love…
