Jasmin & Jay’s Rooftop Ceremony at The Penn

Written by Caitlin Hoare
Jasmin & Jay’s relaxed summer wedding brought laidback, stylish Ibiza vibes to the Dorset Coast.

You would be forgiven for thinking today’s wedding took place in some dreamy, far-flung destination thanks to the bright blue sky and incredible ocean views, but (although still v.dreamy) J&J actually tied the knot at The Penn Estate in Dorset.

Their July wedding was a beautiful blend of Ibiza influences, elegant minimalism and classic English styles – the perfect match for this charming, cliff top wedding location. Keep scrolling to soak up ALL the balmy summer wedding inspo, breath-taking views and super stylish tablescape decor.

Notes from the Bride

Jasmin says…

We wanted somewhere with destination wedding vibes but without having to actually go abroad. Being near the sea was our top priority (and thankfully the weather was very much on our side on the day!). We fell in love with The Penn Estate because it had that abroad feeling, but with less logistics to consider. It had enough luxury accommodation for our whole party, across the Castle, Clifftops Lodges and further Estate accommodation too, meaning everyone was close by and could celebrate with us not only on the day itself, but the day before and the (hungover) breakfast the day after!

We also fell in love with the Clifftops roof terrace, a fabulous asymmetric deck, surrounded by glass with panoramic sea views; it was the perfect setting for our ceremony, with the elegant Castle in the backdrop. The Castle and grounds were used later for our reception and dinner. Having a number of options and flexibility meant that we could transition our guests seamlessly into different spaces with different views for each part of the day, which kept the day exciting and interesting.

We also felt so at ease with the team at The Penn, Hannah and Tessa were a perfect team. They took care of all the behind the scenes organisation, not just on the day, but throughout the whole planning journey. We had multiple meetings and visits to the Castle which put us at ease every time.

For my dress I didn’t want anything too extravagant or OTT and found my perfect dress at The Bridal Room Broadway. It was figure hugging, plunging and had a long train. I also wanted something fairly simple for my shoes so I actually ended up buying two pairs of wedding shoes and did a bit of DIY to create my own bespoke heels. My accessories included my late grandfather’s wedding ring, teardrop earrings (in keeping with my engagement ring) and a diamanté hair slide.

I knew I wanted my hair down to feel more like ‘me’ on the day so I did my hair myself in a Hollywood waves style but a little more subtle and Amy Louise Nash looked after my makeup, creating a very natural, soft glam look which I loved.

Jay wore a high street suit and styled it with Vans trainers for a relaxed Mediterranean look which suited the venue and day perfectly. I also gifted him a gold BOSS watch on the morning of the wedding which he wore.

Tessa from the Penn Creative Collection – The Penn Estate’s in-house florist, stylist and designer pulled everything together for us in relation to the decor. She also created the most amazing bouquets featuring white roses, orchids and bleached ruscus with some blush/nude tones to tie in with the bridesmaid dresses – they were absolutely perfect, wouldn’t have changed a thing! In fact, I even requested that the maid of honour’s bouquet was slightly different to the bridesmaids’ which Tessa also made work perfectly! She subbed in the orchids at the last minute due to peonies (my favourite) being just over their peak season and it was a small blessing as I LOVED them!

We wanted something very simple and elegant for our wedding cake and the lovely Angela at Blossom Dream Cakes didn’t disappoint. We went for one layer of ‘luscious lemon’ and the other coffee (which Angela made gluten-free for us). She also made a batch of vegan cupcakes so we were able to accommodate everyone’s dietary needs as we served our cake as dessert.

Cru Events looked after the catering on the day and because we didn’t want the standard three course formal plated menu Cru really did deliver with a wonderful feasting style menu, including mini burgers!

Laura Dean Photography was the most amazing photographer (and human being) ever! We found Laura on Instagram and fell in love with her style instantly. So much so, we actually arranged our wedding date to fit in with her availability.

Best part of the day

We wanted a wedding weekend not just one day, so all of our guests could celebrate with us, staying on the venues grounds, for three days and two nights. Having everyone there with us the whole time was truly the best part for us.

From one couple to another…

Everyone will tell you the day goes fast which it absolutely does, but we found that it was easy to overlook everything worrying about what’s next on the ‘list’. Enjoy every moment as you’re in it, take a few seconds to take it all in, as the memories will last forever!
