Notes from the Stylist

When we visited 100 Barrington, Giada and I loved the dramatic mother-of-pearl chandelier. Its exquisite, romantic, and minimalist style was our primary source of inspiration. In contrast to the venue’s urban red and brown tones, we drew out its gentle whites and gold accents in our colour scheme.

Inspired by the chandelier’s dangling shells, we wanted to create a dream-like scene against an urban Brixton landscape. We mixed vintage elements with dreamy, floaty fabrics and drew out our models’ fun-loving personalities with an audio guestbook and ‘going away’ bike. Our choice of key vintage pieces nodded to the location’s industrial heritage and enabled us to keep an urban edge amidst the dreamy glamour.

We were looking for two understated yet utterly gorgeous outfits for this shoot, and Andrea Hawkes Bridal was perfect. Our two dresses come from their Amaryllis Collection of timeless, traditional wedding gowns. We loved that Amaryllis is an ode to organic materials and original dressmaking techniques. We matched the gowns with the 2022 Andrew Hawkes Bridal Veil Collection and completed the look with delicate white heels from Emmy London.

We created an urban dream-like setting using long, floating fabrics and delicate textures. The colour palette was made up of pearl whites, golds and dark greens, and we mixed vintage and modern components into our styling to complement this. We arranged draping tablecloths and napkins on the table with cut glass candlesticks and scalloped gold-rimmed plates. We paired this with delicate, contemporary cutlery, glassware, and striking minimalist stationery. We styled key vintage pieces to tie into our theme, like our 1930s ‘going away’ bike, complete with soft ribbons, baskets of blooms and painted tin cans. This was finished off with a sweet ‘just married’ sign. Finally, we wanted to give a nod to the LGBTQ+ community by incorporating the beautiful rainbow mural near the venue into our day.

Caroline Savignon worked with Lou Lou Event Design to create the flowers with me. Gypsophila and long white roses were combined to create a scheme mirrored the chandelier’s delicate dangling shells. We wanted our flowers to reflect our minimalist approach, and Caroline did a fantastic job mixing edgy modern styles with dreamy pearl white blooms.

We recommend finding a venue that will complement your style and work its characteristics and quirks into your theme. Get inspired by your venue’s offers – just like we did with 100 Barrington’s incredible chandelier. Be sure to celebrate your personalities, too – bring pieces that reflect your unique style and charisma. The ‘going away bike’ and audio guestbook we featured brought out the couples’ fun-loving personalities and looked terrific in the urban setting. Finally, keep it sustainable and avoid unnecessary waste. Opt for second-hand or vintage items over new ones (check out Lou Lou Event Design’s fantastic inventory of family heirlooms), or get crafty and make some props yourself. We painted used tin cans for our ‘going away’ bike, and we loved the result.
