In the heart of medieval Wells, The Bishop’s Palace is a unique wedding reception venue with over 800 years of history. The ancient remnants of the Great Hall spread across 14 acres of RHS partner gardens create an enchanting backdrop that lasts a lifetime. The Palace, surrounded by a tranquil moat and offering views of Wells Cathedral, a picturesque willow bridge, and seasonal flowers, provides a timeless and beautiful space for couples, their friends, and family to gather.
The drawbridge leads across the iconic moat, welcoming couples with a glass of something sparkling as they step into the historic Palace. The atmospheric medieval entrance hall, with a roaring log fire, is perfect for colder months, while in fine weather, the terrace and gardens offer an ideal setting for drinks and canapés.
For the wedding reception, the magical medieval Undercroft accommodates up to 150 guests for a wedding breakfast or 165 for an evening reception. Choose from approved caterers who offer canapés, a two or three-course wedding breakfast, feasts, and evening buffet and drinks packages. Caterers also arrange menu-tasting sessions and provide staff, linen, and tableware.
Following speeches and cake cutting, the elegant Long Gallery becomes a retreat for tea and coffee, offering an informal atmosphere for guests. Meanwhile, the Undercroft transforms into a space for the couple’s first dance. The celebration, with a choice of live music or a DJ, continues until 11.30pm, with carriages arriving by midnight.
While The Bishop’s Palace doesn’t hold a wedding license, couples can choose from a selection of approved premises for their ceremony, all within walking distance, such as Wells Cathedral, St Cuthbert’s Church, or the elegant Wells Town Hall, located adjacent to the Palace in the historic marketplace.
For those needing somewhere to stay, there are several charming hotels and guest houses for all budgets in the centre of the historic small city of Wells and within walking distance of the Palace
