Jenny & Jon’s Winter Wedding at Lusty Glaze Beach

Written by Caitlin Hoare
Mulled wine on the beach? Sounds like the perfect wedding reception to me!

Although Jenny and Jon had to change their big spring wedding to an intimate celebration in winter, the result was just as impressive. It’s fair to say that while a December wedding may not have been their first choice, their chosen venue – Lusty Glaze – is full of atmosphere, beauty and charm all year round. They managed to pull together all of the vital components (last minute), and carefully adapt them to the season. I have a suspicion that their beautiful Christmas micro wedding actually ended up with much more personality than the original spring counterpart may have had!

Notes from the Bride

Jenny says…

We chose the venue because we both spend all of our time on, in or by the sea! We both grew up by the coast and have marine related jobs. When we are not at work, we are surfing, sailing, swimming, paddle-boarding or on the beach! Lusty Glaze is an incredible venue right on the beach with a fantastic atmosphere and we knew it was perfect for us as soon as we saw it. We loved the fairy lights, the relaxed atmosphere and the staff were amazing.

We had originally planned a May wedding in 2020 but due to the pandemic, had to postpone. As our new date was near Christmas we decided to go for a Christmas theme, so we had various baubles on the tables for our wedding favours and red velvet and hessian with tea lights etc.

My mum and I made the cake! It was a red velvet cake (to match our Christmas theme) with maple cream cheese icing. The flowers were from my mother-in-law and the seahorses are because of our sailing boat, Seahorse. The catering was provided by Lusty Glaze and the food was incredible from start to finish. We had mulled wine on beach which was perfect as it was freezing outside and amazing canapés. The main course was incredible and by far the best steak we have ever eaten! And the pudding and evening food were so delicious and included a cake of cheese, which made Jon’s day!

Our photographer, Alexa Poppe, was absolutely amazing. Alexa was meant to be our photographer for our first planned wedding back in May, and she was so helpful in helping us to rearrange our day for December. She was brilliant on the wedding day itself, and was so fun to work with! She felt like part of the family and her photos really capture the day.

Best part of the day

Seeing our family and friends, whether this was in person at Lusty Glaze or via the Zoom link we had set up. As we were only allowed 15 people (including ourselves and our baby), there were people we would have loved to have been there that weren’t able to attend. We live-streamed the ceremony and my cousin and our nieces and nephews did readings during the ceremony for us over Zoom. It was so emotional as we really missed having them all there in person, but it was so lovely to be able to share some of the day with them.

From one couple to another…

We planned and rearranged our wedding three times due to the pandemic. Originally, we had over 100 people planning to attend, and had to cancel a few months before which was so disappointing. We had everything arranged for May, including table settings down to the last detail as we had been planning the wedding for over a year. It was so hard planning the December wedding as we only found out three days beforehand that we could actually go ahead, due to lockdown finishing on the 2nd December. Because of this, we were quite relaxed about decorations and the finer details as we weren’t even sure if it was going to happen and this actually made planning much less stressful. I’d say if you are planning a wedding during a pandemic, try and be flexible, think about what’s important (venue, photographer etc) and just try and go with the flow as much as possible. For us, we didn’t notice or miss the smaller things on the day.
