Setting

Set on the edge of a valley overlooking the rolling Catalan hills and with the foothills of the Pyrenees in the distance, the centuries-old ‘Mas Casamitjana’ enjoys a stunning location near the charming town of Moià in the province of Barcelona and boasts some of the prettiest sunsets you’ll ever see.

This Must Be The Place was created by British owners Jo and Duncan. They came to Barcelona with a dream and have used their experience in UK music festivals and events (Duncan – Bestival / Camp Bestival / Sunday Best) and film production (Jo – films inc ‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’), plus a load of hard work, to turn it into a reality. They can’t wait to welcome you to their home.

The centuries-old ‘Mas Casamitjana’ has been lovingly refurbished in a Modern Rustic style. Their philosophy has been to respectfully restore what was old, and where they have added new features, they have done so with a more modern touch and lots of bespoke creativity.

Several event spaces are available in and around the house for you and your guests to enjoy, and they have all been designed to give you total freedom as to how and where you would like to experience individual elements of your day.

The centrepiece is their lovingly-restored conjoined barns, ‘Els Graners’, that open out onto the central courtyard ‘, El Barri’. The stairs and balcony lead you to ‘L’Era’, their large floral yard, and the small but perfectly formed ‘La Caseta’. Down a few steps from there, you’ll find a lush terrace garden, ‘La Feixa’. Adjacent to L’Era, you will also find ‘El Mirador’, a large grassy space with stunning views and higher still ‘El Paddock’, a ceremony and photo-call space with jaw-dropping 360° views.

Say ‘I do’, eat, drink and dance – in or out (or shake it all about) – you decide.

They have four spacious ensuite guest rooms, which occupy the entire ground floor and lower ground floor of the main house. They can hold up to 12 people and come with a self-catering breakfast room. For your other guests, they have a comprehensive local accommodation brochure.

The Talking Heads song ‘This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)’ inspired their name and philosophy. Songwriter David Byrne describes it as “a real honest kind of love song… I tried to write one that wasn’t corny, that didn’t sound stupid the way many do. I think I succeeded.”;

He did, and they intend to too.

Ceremony

They have five stunning exterior location options for the ceremony of your dreams, plus one equally stunning interior one (just in case). They have three optional ceremony structures that can provide a backdrop to frame the moment – their metal triangle and circle can be moved to wherever you would like them. While their antique iron gate is fixed permanently in an area known as El Paddock. All the external locations feature views to die for.

Reception

They also have multiple options, inside and out, for your ‘Aperitivo’ (aka Cocktail) and your Dinner (aka Reception).

For the reception, you can choose between a Sit-down Dinner, a Family-Style Dinner, or a Food Market Wedding. You can eat outside in L’Era or inside in Els Graners-both are fabulous options!

Accommodation

They have four spacious and stylishly decorated guest rooms with ensuite bathrooms, which occupy the entire ground and lower ground floors of the main house.

They can hold up to 12 people and have been named after their favourite jazz legends:

Louis Armstrong – King-size bed for two people. This one is usually the couples’ suite!

Ella Fitzgerald – King-size bed for two people.

Duke Ellington – Family suite comprising a private bedroom with twin beds for two people, plus an optional additional king-size sofa bed for two people in an adjoining room.

Nina Simone – Family suite comprising a private bedroom with a king-size bed for two people, plus a single bed and an optional additional single sofa bed in an adjoining room.

There is also a well-equipped self-catering kitchen for your use.

In conjunction with Magadins Vell, their excellent local farm shop and restaurant, they have created some scrumptious breakfast hampers as an optional extra.

Food & Drink

Caravan Made are their exclusive caterer (and the only exclusive supplier). Caravan Made are Sílvia and Javi, a team of fantastic chefs and waiting staff. This Must Be The Place entered into this partnership with Caravan Made in 2023 and has never looked back. They were the natural choice of the vast majority of their couples, who were drawn to them by their fresh, modern and seasonal take on gastronomy, along with their understated style, impeccable service and strong ethics.

It is one of the best decisions This Must Be The Place has ever made, and they only ever receive super-positive feedback about the food, drinks and service.

Sustainability

They strive to be environmentally conscious and sustainable personally and within their business. They love to reuse and repurpose old materials (you’ll hopefully spot a lot of this when you come to look around), and they try to reduce their waste as much as possible. All their kitchens (including the guest one you will use) include recycling stations.

Since 2023 they have been exclusively working with one catering company, Caravan Made, partly because they share these values and have a local and seasonal approach to their gastronomy (they are also very nice people, and their food is delicious!).

The hand soap, moisturiser and shower gel that is complimentary in all the bathrooms is made by Yope using natural or low-processed ingredients. Their fields around the house are farmed with respect to the environment by local organic farmers Biobastona.

They ask you to do your bit, too. They only allow biodegradable or floral confetti and ask that you do not use wedding decorations, favours, and other single-use, non-recyclable, or non-biodegradable elements. They also strongly recommend asking your florist to use reusable or biodegradable floral bases and encourage your friends and family to take flowers away at the end of the night so they have a second lease of life.

Local Area

This Must Be The Place (aka Mas Casamitjana) is about an hour from Barcelona and its airport, also from Girona and its ‘Costa Brava’ airport, and 30 minutes from the enchanting city of Vic.

Barcelona has a reputation as one of the trendiest cities in Europe, and the province of Catalunya is well known for its wonderful climate, beautiful natural light, fantastic food and wine.

Their nearest town (10 mins) is Moià, a charming historical market town with a fine tradition of producing outstanding food – much of which is organic. Moià is most alive on a Sunday morning for its market day, and people from all over the province come to sample its high-quality produce – and for a town of approx 6,000 inhabitants to sustain eight butcher/delis, three bakeries and a host of great restaurants, it must be doing something very right. Yum.

Oh, and it also has an excellent record shop!
