Pynes House is set within Devon’s picturesque Exe Valley, where rolling hills stretch into the horizon. This historic property, steeped in elegance and believed to be the inspiration for Barton Park in Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, combines bold proportions with refined simplicity.
The original house, built in 1700, has been lovingly restored by its owners to enhance its multitude of original features and create luxe spaces fit for the contemporary couple. Though it feels a world away in the countryside, it’s just a ten-minute drive from the cathedral city of Exeter.
Pynes House offers a quintessential country house experience and specialises in multi-day and weekend weddings for which couples have the opportunity to extend their celebrations across more than one day.
Outdoor weddings at Pynes House take place in the front courtyard, framed by fastigiate oak trees and the rolling Devon hills as a backdrop. Inside, choose from one of the grand State Rooms. The most popular is the Drawing Room, which offers a light-filled room overlooking the fountain and rose terrace. The Ballroom, with its historic chandeliers, might be chosen for larger weddings. Or consider the grand Entrance Hall, a majestic stone staircase and balcony which gives rise to a uniquely intimate but dramatic ceremony location.
Each setting offers stunning views and a timeless atmosphere, making it a memorable choice for exchanging vows in any weather.
During warmer months, drinks receptions gather on the rose terrace, where guests enjoy the fragrance of the lavender and rose gardens with the background ambience of the fountain or perhaps play croquet and other garden games on the extensive lawns. In cooler seasons or in wet weather, the grandeur of the State Rooms provides a warm, atmospheric and inviting space for toasts and music.
For the wedding breakfast, the stunning Ballroom accommodates 96 guests, or larger parties can be hosted in a garden marquee for up to 130 guests.
For the evening party, guests dance under chandeliers, with the stylish bar at the heart of the celebration. The cosy Morning Room offers a quieter space for any guests who want a comfortable space to chat and relax.
The house features 12 individually designed double bedrooms sleeping 24 guests, with options for additional single beds to bring the total up to 28. The styling of the rooms skilfully blends contemporary and classic styles and makes the most of the spacious proportions and extensive views.
From the Northcote bedroom with its historic, detailed ceiling and contemporary four-poster bed to Copleston with huge double aspect windows and views far across the valley, each room has the wow factor so that guests will feel like they have been allocated the best room.
Pynes House is designed to feel like your home from home for the duration of your stay. High-quality linens, the most comfortable beds, elegant furnishings, and local artisanal touches ensure a comfortable and relaxing stay. Guest spaces include the Pantry, where you can gather for breakfast or cosy chats over cups of tea or coffee.
Pynes House partners exclusively with Pickle Shack, an award-winning Devon caterer with Michelin-trained chefs, to provide exceptional dining experiences. Sustainability and a celebration of Devon’s exceptional local food suppliers are at the heart of Pickle Shack’s ethos. Bespoke is Pickle Shack’s mantra, and the team is more than happy to share their wedding food wisdom to craft a menu with couples that reflects their personality and the mood of their celebration.
The personalised theme continues when it comes to your wedding drinks, Pynes House offers an extensive, curated wine, drinks and cocktail list, but will also work with you to bring your own ideas to fruition.
Sustainability is central to Pynes House’s operations. The venue prioritises refillable products, such as all-natural toiletries and cleaning supplies. Fallen wood from the estate is used in the fireplaces, and five beehives are maintained on-site to support local pollination efforts.
Pynes House is located three miles (approximately 10 minutes’ drive) north of Exeter city centre and two and a half miles (approximately seven minutes’ drive) from Exeter St David’s mainline train station. Exeter is approximately two hours from London Paddington.
What an excellent wedding venue! We couldn’t recommend it highly enough. They were so helpful with everything from planning to making sure everything ran perfectly on the day. Many of the guests commented on how spectacular the venue is, and we couldn’t agree more. It was like a fairytale to be able to stay and get married in such a magnificent place, and to have all of our friends and family around us too. The accommodation is beautiful, from the bedrooms to the guest kitchen, Pynes felt like it was ours for the weekend and it was wonderful to have so many of the wedding party staying in the same place as us for the weekend of the wedding. Fantastic wedding venue, we couldn’t have been happier.
We had the most amazing wedding at Pynes House on 1st June 2019, Kate and the whole team were incredible. Jo our planner on site was second to none. The whole experience from the moment we booked up until the wedding day itself was seamless and I would highly recommend them. The whole venue is so beautiful is was literally like living a dream for the day!
We booked Pynes House as our wedding venue without having visited, so that made it all the more sweeter when we showed up and it felt like we walked into a fairy tale. The house is spectacular, and the grounds were absolutely beautiful, with the colourful gardens and the rolling hills in the background. We had an amazing sunny day one night and a rainy day another night, but regardless of the weather conditions, the venue’s charm shone through. It was also incredibly fun to have our closest friends and family staying under one roof for the entire weekend. We couldn’t imagine a better venue and location, and we’re so happy we chose it sight unseen!
Our event manager, Natalie, was amazing, too. We talked through our vision with her, and when the weekend arrived, she executed it perfectly. We didn’t have to worry about anything, which allowed us to fully enjoy our weekend.
Thank you to Pynes House for giving us some of our best memories! We hope to get back someday.

What a dream venue. What a dream of a wedding.
We fell in love with every aspect of Pynes from our first viewing: its exquisite elegance and cosiness, the magnificent driveway, large romantic fireplaces, the grand staircase; perfect for a bridal entrance and the multiple gorgeously decorated guest rooms. For us, though, the people made our wedding at Pynes just as magical as the venue itself.
From day one, Phoebe was on hand with recommendations and advice. Before we booked, we visited Pynes, and she helped us picture how our day could go in each room. Once we booked our date, the Pynes team were in touch with a list of FAQs, recommended suppliers and helpful tips. Again, Phoebe was on hand to answer any questions throughout our planning process and to ensure we accounted for everything we wanted to. She was incredible on the day, ensuring every moment was seamless and contributing to the celebratory mood; nothing seemed to trouble her; she even appeared with a drink in hand to help calm Hetty’s nerves during a dress disaster, quickly turning the moment into a funny story. Our guests commented on how organised the day was, and we will safely say this is purely because of our outstanding suppliers, especially Phoebe.
Closer to the day, we met Jay, who helped guide us through our drinks choices, including sourcing an incredible rose and ensuring Dan had a whiskey for toasting. Jay specialises in cocktails, which our guests were only too happy to sample. The Esspresso martinis were some of the best we’ve ever had, and they certainly kept the party going all night, even after the early start!
We loved extending our celebration over three days; having our closest friends and family stay with us the night before and recover with us the day after meant the world. The multiple rooms on the ground floor gave our guests space to celebrate how they wanted, from hide-and-seek in the rose garden to deep chats in the drawing room or partying the night away in the ballroom. The whole house overflowed with laughter and love. We both have treasured memories we will look back on for years to come.
Thank you to all the team at Pynes for making our wedding feel like a fairytale. If you’re considering booking Pynes as your wedding venue, we couldn’t recommend it highly enough.
Married November 2024
I was so nervous prior to my first visit to Pynes House; we had read so many fabulous reviews about this impressive venue, most of which detail love at first sight and I am so pleased to say, Pynes House did not disappoint. After so many unsuccessful venue searches and visits, from the minute the car started to roll down the long and inviting driveway, we were in awe. The house is set within the most beautiful surroundings and is visually breathtaking. Each luxurious room is decorated to perfection and what every bride dreams of for their wedding night. Although Jon and I knew we wanted to marry outside, there was much less stress leading up to the day, as we knew the inside of the house was as beautiful as the outside. However, we were lucky enough to have the wedding we had always hoped for and it couldn’t have been more perfect. Heather and Kate are so lovely and such a pleasure to work with. From the moment we first spoke, they were helpful, friendly and supportive and we couldn’t have asked for more. Pynes House is the most gorgeous home-from-home and provided the most phenomenal setting for our dream wedding.
Pynes House was simply perfect! From our first visit, we knew it was the place we would get married. The house and grounds and beautiful, and the guest rooms are gorgeous.
The variety of spaces indoors and out meant we could plan our day in exactly the way we wanted, and the open days were so helpful to take our families and get excited!
Would absolutely recommend Pynes to any couple!
Married November 2024
What a magnificent venue Pynes House is, the images do not do it justice. What you don’t see from the images is how warm, helpful and kind everyone is who is associated with Pynes House. We got married here in August 2019 and Kate, Heather, Geoff and Jon were fantastic. Jo who is the resident wedding coordinator was phenomenal, if we ever had another event like this she would be first on our list as a guest! The rooms are large, airy and beautifully appointed. Each room is unique, every guest thought they got the “best room”. The grounds and gardens are tasteful and a lovely place to spend any amount of time. We cannot recommend this place enough.
Choosing to have our wedding at Pynes House was the best decision we could have made. An incredible venue with absolutely stunning bedrooms and perfect for our big day. The team at Pynes House were an absolute dream to work with, and we could not recommend them highly enough.
Married November 2024
WOW!! Pynes House is the most beautiful wedding venue in Devon hands down. It was truly amazing and a very wonderful set up for a wedding. Having searched far and wide in Devon to find the ideal wedding venue for our day, and seeing Pynes first we never should have looked any further. Stop your search! It blows you away. The drive up to the house, the entrance and the welcome and then the rooms inside are all equally stunning. The rose garden is charming and perfect for canapés and drinks. The location makes you feel like you are miles away in the countryside and yet you are still so close to the city of Exeter and the transport links and local hotels. Ideal. The whole team and the families who run Pynes, are the most helpful and friendly people you will meet in the wedding venue industry. Nothing compared to Pynes House they were brilliant. Heather and Kate made us feel like ours was the only wedding that year. Always able to answer questions and help with all the planning. With the exclusive use of the house and not back-to-back weddings (like some venues), you really do feel like you have the best of the best. And not to mention Jo their on site wedding planner!! She is fantastic!! Cannot fault her dedication and attention to detail – for us she helped make the day run smooth and guided us as a couple. She sat down with us to go through everything the day before and then on the day was behind the scenes making everything happen. Couldn’t have done it without her. Any doubt, go and see for yourself the beauty of this venue. Thank you Pynes House.
Our guests were blown away by Pynes House, it was so lovely on the day to hear their overwhelmingly positive experiences of staff and the surroundings. Everyone in the team worked exceptionally hard to bring our vision to life. Many of our friends have spoken about how stressful they found the process of planning their wedding. But my husband and I felt totally supported by the whole team at Pynes through every step of planning to the day itself. Jay, the drinks manager, was so helpful and accommodating with our bespoke requests. The team at Pickle Shack created an outstanding menu, and the service was fantastic. We must also mention Phoebe from Pynes House, who made us feel so welcome and whose timeline for the day meant that we didn’t feel like we needed to oversee anything.
