Located close to Sudbury on the Suffolk / Essex border, the Barns are part of an ancient settlement at the end of a quiet, mile-long road. Yet they are easily accessible from the popular villages and market towns of Lavenham, Bury St Edmunds, and Long Melford.
Together with the Church of St Peter and St Paul, Alpheton (and Alpheton Hall), the Barns sit within approximately 25 acres of woodland and meadows surrounded by organic farmland, often with sheep grazing nearby.
The venue offers two distinctive options for your ceremony: the intimate West Barn, a dedicated indoor space, or the Woodland Ceremony Glade, available from May to September and with the comfort of the West Barn as a fallback in case of bad weather. Both settings can accommodate up to 200 guests but are equally suited to more intimate celebrations. For a traditional church wedding, the adjacent parish church of St Peter and St Paul, Alpheton, offers a picturesque alternative, subject to qualifying criteria.
Follow your Ceremony with confetti in the Confetti Arboretum, which includes a heart-shaped mown grass area surrounded by long grasses, wildflowers and young trees. Ideal for drone shots and any large-group photographs you may choose to take.
To begin the celebrations, you can entertain your guests with drinks and canapés in the Stackyard Wedding Garden, an enclosed grassed space with a brick terrace, tables, chairs, a charming bar cart, an oak pagoda, and an oak tree gazebo. These last two have power and lighting and are a popular spot for musicians and a beautiful backdrop for photographs. The garden provides plenty of space for garden games and other entertainment, whilst being safe for young guests.
The South Barn, the venue’s largest and oldest structure, is steeped in history with 10th-century origins. Its spacious interior comfortably accommodates wedding parties of 50 to 200 guests. The flexible layout allows room for dining, a bar, and dancing without rearranging furniture. Additional features include aisles suitable for photo booths or relaxation areas, vintage wooden ladders and iron hoops, all with hanging Edison lights that can be lowered for decoration with flowers, foliage, or ribbon. The barns have excellent acoustics, ideal for your live music or DJ, and plenty of space for dancing or even a Ceilidh.
Evening celebrations often extend to the Barn’s courtyard, which features a built-in pizza oven, outdoor kitchen, and cosy seating beneath twinkling fairy lights and a beautiful olive tree. Just add a few blankets and cushions to make it your own, or even better, hire a coffee or dessert truck to treat your guests and keep the party going.
While the venue does not offer accommodation, it is ideally located near Suffolk’s historic wool and silk-weaving towns, including Lavenham, Long Melford, and Bury St Edmunds, all within a 4-10 mile radius. These towns offer a range of hotels and B&Bs to suit all budgets and preferences. A curated list of recommendations is available to assist with your planning.
The Barns feature a fully equipped commercial kitchen and bar kitchen, offering flexibility to work with recommended caterers or approved external providers. The courtyard’s pizza oven is a popular choice for evening food, providing a relaxed setting between musical sets, and there is space for evening food or drinks trucks, too. The Barns are licensed for the sale of alcohol. Where couples wish to provide their own drink, no corkage is payable all day, and an open bar is permitted.
Choosing Alpheton Hall Barns supports the ongoing preservation of these Grade II listed buildings. Restorative works have prioritised natural and breathable materials, including seasoned oak, sheep wool insulation, and lime plaster. The venue’s commitment extends to planting new trees, hedges, and wildflowers each year to enrich the environment. Caterers are required to remove all food and service waste and recycle where possible, and couples and florists are encouraged to avoid floral foam and plastics. The venue has a store of wedding props, including vintage suitcases (for cards and presents), cake stands, easels, galvanised buckets for flowers, and directional signage, all available for couples to use at no additional cost to minimise décor waste.
Alpheton Hall Barns is surrounded by the historic wool towns of Lavenham and Long Melford, each boasting stunning architecture and cultural landmarks. Guests can explore National Trust properties, charming market towns, and museums.
The venue is easily reached via the A134, with ample on-site parking and provisions for coach access. Sudbury train station offers connections to London, and a taxi list is available for convenience.
The bridal party or frail guests can be dropped off immediately adjacent to the entrance to the South Barn or the Woodland Ceremony Glade (if required).
We cannot recommend AHB highly enough. The coordinators/owners, Nic and Carol, were so amazing to work with on our special day. What stood out to us about AHB was the venue’s flexibility, which gave us the option to really make the day our own. As we were having a vegetarian wedding, having the option to choose our own caterer was really important to us. In the lead-up, Carol was super responsive and patient, replying promptly to my one million emails. Additionally, being able to decorate everything ourselves the day before meant we could make sure everything was perfect, rather than needing to pay someone else to sort everything on the morning of. Nic and Carol are also really generous; there are countless wonderful props and decorations available for use at the barns for free, and we made use of lots of them. They also have some unique features which you can use to make the day really special, such as the chalkboard photo booth and the dancefloor confetti balloon. On top of all of this, the venue is stunningly beautiful. We loved the magic of being in such a historic barn, and being able to get married in the beautiful woodland surrounded by birdsong was so amazing. I am also a big fan of their many guinea fowl, which you may see wandering about! On the day, both Nic and Carol’s many years of experience really showed, and they were so helpful, making everything run smoothly. Stunning venue, magnificent coordinators, can’t recommend enough, 10/10, wish we could do it all over again!
Married May 2025
A truly stunning venue with so much outdoor space and gorgeous landscapes. The barns are so authentic and decorated beautifully, a really special feel to them. Carol and Nic exceeded all of our expectations, they are so helpful and responsive, and so thoughtful and creative with the extra little touches, that really boosted our wedding day from good to exceptionally perfect! If a barn/country wedding is what you’re after, I cannot recommend Alpheton Hall Barns enough! They have a wide array of rustic props and decorations to be used, the space is plenty big enough, and the dance floor balloon that pops confetti during your first dance was just brilliant. The helped us achieve our dream wedding; not one hiccup or problem throughout the day, they truly care about each and every wedding they host, moving mountains to help you bring your day to life. They recommended the best of the best in terms of suppliers, all of which were superb from start to finish. Multiple guests made the effort to tell us that it was simply the best wedding they’d ever been to. We had the most memorable, magical and special wedding day at Alpheton, all thanks to Carol, Nic, and their beautiful, beautiful barn.
Like most who get married, this was the happiest day of our lives. But it would not have been anywhere near as amazing without Carol, Nic, and the beautiful setting that is Alpheton Hall Barns. From the very first phone call, we felt certain we were in good hands. They offered us sage advice when we needed it and went above and beyond for us.
We looked at countless other venues, but when we found AHB knew we’d hit the jackpot. The venue is unbelievably beautiful; we were astounded that somewhere like this could even exist.
While looking at other venues there seemed to be a general one size fits all approach with the people we met. The complete opposite can be said of Carol and Nic. It was clear from the first call that they cared deeply about making our day special, and I must say they delivered.
The ceremony took place in the woodland area, and it was perfect. We weren’t worried about rain because the Barn was a gorgeous second choice in case of rain.
We had over 200 people attend the evening of our wedding, but AHB took that amount of people in it’s stride. With gorgeous grounds, the magical barn, and court yard areas this place was the perfect backdrop for a truly spectacular day.
We can’t put into words how grateful we are to both Carol and Nick for making our wedding exactly what we wanted. It was the best day our lives.
Married August 2024
This venue is simply amazing and our guests were amazed at the beautiful barn. We were able to have a woodland ceremony, welcome drinks in the gardens followed by a reception in the barn. The barn is stunning from the polished floors, unique barrel stands and open beams, as well as the roof decorations. The venue provided an amazing list of vendors to work with who all work regularly at the barns. In the evening, we had pizzas that were cooked on-site in outdoor pizza ovens, again, which simply were outstanding. The venue has ample parking and great facilities.
Nic and Carol went above and beyond in all areas. We were blown away by the personal touches they added. They are friendly and approachable and offer such individualised ideas. This venue is naturally beautiful and then has ample opportunity to add personal touches to your perfect wedding. The grounds and venue overall are stunning! It allowed us to have the most magical wedding that was beyond all expectations.
Married August 2024
We don’t even know where to begin in thanking Carol and Nic for everything they did to make our wedding so magical. From the very first moment, their kindness, care, and attention to detail put us at ease, and on the day itself, everything felt like a dream.
ABH was absolutely breathtaking, and every little detail was perfect. But more than that, it was the warmth and support from Carol and Nic that made us feel so special. They gave us the gift of being able to truly relax and soak up every precious moment, something we will cherish forever.
Our guests are still talking about how beautiful and seamless the day was. We will carry these memories with us for the rest of our lives, and we are so grateful that it was all made possible by them.
Married September 2025
Alpheton Hall Barns, you stole our hearts the moment we entered the venue.
We got engaged in October 2022 and knew we wanted to be wed in the summer of 2023. We had a vision of how we wanted our wedding – festival, summer, chilled informal vibes with a venue that allowed us to be us! The barn and the woodland ceremony area did not disappoint and complimented our vision so well. We instantly felt at ease with the owners Nic and Carol who have been with us every step of the way during both the planning and delivery of the wedding. No ask has been too big, and they have both been so accommodating. They are truly pro’s at what they do! The preferred suppliers list helped no end, again ensuring the day ran smoothly. We are still on an absolute high. The compliments from our guests are still flooding in. We simply had the best day filled with love, laughter and happiness!
Married June 2023
What a day! We can’t thank Carol and Nic enough for our wedding and experience at Alpheton Hall Barns! From the first visit, they were warm and enthusiastic, offering lots of ideas and advice to make our day feel special and unique to us. On the lead-up up they were also great at promptly answering any questions we had. They really know their stuff when it comes to the ins and outs of a wedding, and we felt in such safe hands. Because of this, we were so relaxed throughout our day and were able to really enjoy every moment without worrying about anything – we’ll forever be grateful for this!
The venue itself is stunning! Relaxed, rustic and with spaces for guests to move around in, which we loved. The weather was a bit touch-and-go, but Carol and Nic put everything in place to make sure that if the woodland ceremony couldn’t happen, the beautiful indoor barn was ready to go. Thankfully, we were able to have our dream outdoor ceremony in the end!
There’s so much flexibility in how you might decorate the barn, meaning that each wedding can feel unique to each couple. Our guests have raved about it, feeling like one of the most joyous and lovely weddings they’ve been to – and we know that the location will have absolutely contributed to that!
Married August 2025
We couldn’t have asked for a better venue and more supportive hosts for our May 2024 wedding. Alpheton Hall Barns is a stunning venue. It looked beautiful with our relatively minimal floral package, the sunny weather meant we had our wedding breakfast with the barn doors open creating a relaxed sociable vibe, it felt intimate for our 83 guests and full and buzzing during the ceilidh.
Nic and Carol made the whole process stress free and personal. They were supportive during the venue set up and absolutely brilliant on the day of the wedding at making sure things ran smoothly including my wife and I were in the right place at the right time. Our guests assumed they were part of the wedding party as they were so friendly and welcoming. Nic and Carol have a great relationship with lots of local suppliers, many of whom we used. They knew the venue well and provided flawless service.
It’s a beautiful part of the world and our guests had no trouble finding hotels and Airbnb’s in which to stay. If you’re looking for Suffolk barn wedding you can’t do better than Alpheton.
Married May 2024
We have just had our wedding at Alpheton and honestly cannot sum up how amazing it was. The venue is stunning – very rural and beautiful surroundings. The barn itself is gorgeous- so bright, airy and perfect for wedding reception. There is plenty of space inside and out and so many quirky touches. But the best part, and part which made our day so amazing, are the fantastic owners. They are so committed to ensuring your wedding day is simply the best. They help with planning and are available from the Friday and all day Saturday. Nothing is too much to ask. We could not have had a more perfect day and are so grateful we found and booked Alpheton!
Where do we start? We had the perfect wedding day, and it was absolutely down to Carol and Nic and this very special venue.
Firstly, the setting is just beautiful. The countryside surrounding the venue is the perfect backdrop for the day.
Carol and Nic have got the balance between rustic style wedding venue and upmarket, modern facilities that I think is harder to achieve than one might think and is done so effortlessly here. It’s got a fully operational kitchen, lovely loos, a kitted out quiet room, proper bar, parking and everything you could wish for.
One of the things that we really appreciated was the fact that the venue is so beautiful and tasteful that you don’t need lots of accessories- saving time, stress and money. We didn’t add any of our own decorations other than flowers, and it didn’t look bare or unfinished.
Carol and Nic also get the balance of helping with your day and not taking over. They have a list of recommended suppliers which is very helpful – we chose all of ours off this list, and they didn’t disappoint. They have obviously been carefully hand-picked and are all of outstanding quality. As an example I made a mistake, and we were short on table cloths – Carol had checked when they were delivered, swiftly let me know and had she not we wouldn’t have found out till the last minute. Little things like this make you know you are in safe hands and really help to calm the pre wedding stress.
Nic did us a special music and light show for our entrance for dinner. Not only was there no charge for this, but it was exceptionally well executed. It for us was the highlight of the day, and I can’t hear the song “Best day of my life” without getting emotional.
Together they are the dream team. They are obviously experts in their field and I just can’t recommend them highly enough. A thank you will never be enough for the memories we have got the rest of our lives!
Married June 2023
During our wedding venue search, we browsed many barns across Essex. And while there were lots of lovely options, we just found that they all felt too similar. On top of that, most came with a long list of rules and additional charges that would’ve forced our big ideas into their mould and pushed us over budget. Thankfully, we found a venue that was the complete opposite.
We wanted somewhere that felt authentic and warm, full of character, with a stunning woodland ceremony area and a backup option we’d be equally excited about if it rained. We found all that and more at Alpheton Hall Barns.
But it’s not just the space that makes this place special; it’s the people at the heart of it. From the very first visit, Carol and Nic’s passion for weddings was obvious. Unlike so many other venues, they don’t treat it like a business. They simply want your day to be the best it can be and give you the freedom and flexibility to make it truly yours.
From lending us decor and letting us set everything up the day before, creating a bespoke music and light show for our grand entrance as Mr & Mrs, to even driving us in their vintage VW camper to and from the ceremony area, Carol, Nic and their family went above and beyond to help us create our perfect day.
Simply put, we had the absolute best day of our lives and can confidently say we couldn’t have achieved our vision anywhere else but Alpheton Hall Barns. So, if you want a venue unlike any other, and a wedding day that feels truly authentic, wholesome and unique to you, you’ve found your place.
Married September 2025
We had our dream wedding day in April this year, and we couldn’t have wished for anything to be different. The historic barns are breathtaking and so practical to cater for guests. We were able to personalise our day in whatever way we wanted, which made it special and individual to us.
What truly made this venue special, are the wonderful owners, Carol and Nic. From the day we had our viewing, to the day after the wedding when we were clearing out, they couldn’t be any more helpful. Both Carol and Nic offered us some amazing advice, and all of our wishes were turned into reality without hesitation. They cared not only for us, but our guests and suppliers throughout our big day. It was so wonderful to see our caterers, bar, band and venue all working together and having a wonderful time together. Exactly the relaxed and fun atmosphere we wanted.
From moving flower arrangements, to capturing photos/videos and sharing them both on the screen in the evening and with us at the end of the night, they really go above and beyond. Special shout out to the youngest member of the AHB team who came over to help us make our entrance and tidy up at the end of the night!
We honestly cannot thank team AHB enough, our day was beyond perfect, and we will treasure the memories forever.
Married April 2023
Alpheton Hall Barns is an amazing venue in a beautiful countryside location, with the most wonderful owners. Nic and Carol really go above and beyond in terms of the support they provide on the day. They’re constantly on the ball to ensure that the day runs smoothly and are keen to help with many additional touches in order to really put on a show for the guests. The venue is well equipped with plenty of additional props for decoration and a pizza oven for late night snacks! We had an absolutely amazing day (as did all our guests). We’re so grateful that we were able to hold our wedding and reception at Alpheton Hall Barns, especially as Nic and Carol stuck with us through two covid-related postponements. It was the most perfect day, we couldn’t have asked for more.
A mix of beautiful location, quirky venue and enthusiastic owners makes Alpheton Hall Barns a place where magic comes to life. When we first met Nic and Carol, their enthusiasm for helping people’s wedding day visions come to life was paramount. They gave us great advice and support to help us choose an amazing team of suppliers which helped to make our wedding day so personal for us!
Carol and Nic were great at communicating in the build-up to the wedding, answering all of the questions which we had! This helped put us at ease and make our planning process stress-free! They go above and beyond for their couples, and it is those added extras (confetti drop, pizza tossing etc, etc) that made our day so magical!
We will be forever grateful to Carol and Nic for helping us to have the wedding beyond our dreams.
Married July 2024
Firstly stunning location, a beautiful woodland setting which makes for a very personal and intimate wedding. Stunning gardens with spectacular views in glorious Suffolk countryside. We could not of picked a better venue for our perfect day. Add in to that the lengths that owners Carol and Nic went to, we booked our wedding with only 6 weeks notice, and they perfectly orchestrated the whole day. The barns are steeped in history and are absolutely beautiful, and if we could do it all again, it would be with Alpheton Hall Barns.
Married June 2023
From start to finish Carol and Nic couldn’t have done more for us. Their genuine passion and love for our day made our day that little bit more special for us. They opened the barns to us on the Friday and stayed with us, helping at every possible chance right up until we left, not once did they rush us. They were there throughout the day on the Saturday to ensure the smoothest of days. Never in the way but always there when you needed. The venue itself, is wonderful. At the end of a single track you feel as if you’re in the middle of nowhere and surrounded by a picturesque background. The woodlands made for a cool (our wedding was on a very hot day in July) and elegant ceremony and comfortably sat all our guests. Our wedding breakfast was held within the barns which again comfortably sat all our guests. They provided pizzas, which we have only had positive feedback from. And again, Nic & Carol were super accommodating as we asked them to do these very last minute! The freedom the barn/ Nic & Carol gave us. Made for our wedding day to be exactly how we imagined it. We were not tied down to use this or that. So we were able to be as imaginative as we wanted to be. Thank you so much, the newlyweds.
Where to begin? We honestly can’t thank owners Nic and Carol enough for everything they did for us! The communication leading up to our wedding was amazing; nothing was too much to ask, and any questions we had were answered immediately. The wedding day was absolutely incredible and even more perfect than what we could have hoped for. They really do go above and beyond. If you’re looking for a barn wedding, you need to book AHB! We also highly recommend booking the woodfire pizza they offer for the evening. This was a huge hit with our guests and extremely good value for money! 10/10!
Married September 2025
We got married at Alpheton Hall Barns, and we don’t want to sound too gleeful, but we can safely say it was the best day of our lives. The venue is charming and whimsically beautiful, and we got lucky with the sunshine, so we were able to have our service in the woodland glade and make use of the lovely stackyard garden for our drinks reception. The reception barn was a perfect size to feel intimate with all our guests but had enough room to dance, chat and celebrate. While the barns don’t need any additional adornments, it was also lovely to be able to put our stamp on the space in the form of bunting, handmade signage, and lovely flowers from Wild & Mae.
If the barns are brilliant, they are only outstripped by the owners! Carol and Nic know every inch of their venue and how to maximise its potential to make the day extra special and have excellent knowledge and insights. They were happy for us to visit on multiple occasions and open days to get a feel for the space, discuss ideas with us, and support us to have our day the way we wanted it. Throughout the process, Nic and Carol were supportive and insightful, and their passion and care for each wedding at the barns is evident in all they do.
We have so much love and appreciation for the barns and everything they meant for our wedding day and celebrating with all our favourite people. We couldn’t have chosen a better place to get married and cannot recommend it enough.
Married June 2024
Alpheton Hall Barns is the most beautiful venue, full of character, in a lovely location and owned by the most wonderful couple whose love and passion for their venue is second to none! In our non-biased opinion everyone should have their wedding at Alpheton Hall Barns! We had our wedding reception at Alpheton Hall Barns in September, it was absolutely perfect and we had the most amazing day. Nic and Carol were outstanding throughout the whole process as well as on the weekend and day itself, the effort that they put into making our day perfect was incredible and we were truly blown away, they are so relaxed which meant the lead up and the day were totally stress free and we were able to take in and enjoy every single moment. The barns, pizza courtyard and grounds are stunning and very well kept, it was lovely to have so many different areas to use on the day and the woodland areas were perfect for our wedding photos & video. We were able to make the barns unique to us and decorate them however we wished which was perfect and exactly what we were looking for in a venue. Nic also took some brilliant candid photos and videos throughout the day which was another really lovely touch. Thank you Nic and Carol for making our day so special, you truly went above and beyond and it really was the day of our dreams, we loved every single second. We are looking forward to visiting the barns in years to come on our anniversary! Thank you so much for everything.
I don’t even know where I start. The venue itself is breath-taking, Especially with the new outdoor ceremony area right in the heart of the woods (where we got married ). Nic and Carol are outstanding! They helped us every single step of the way, even if we did email every other day and visited the venue numerous times. Nothing was too much for them. They are so accommodating and genuinely lovely people. The venue itself is/was such a talking point, even without all the decorations the barn is stunning. The drive up to the venue is very scenic. From start to finish everything was so perfect and beautiful. We will be forever grateful to you both .
Free to attend, these events are an ideal opportunity for couples who are engaged and looking for a venue, as well as couples who have booked their...
The number of guests for the ceremony and wedding breakfast is limited to 200. The layout of the Barns (twin aisles and bays) provides great flexibility, so the Barns are equally suitable for smaller weddings, typically from 40.
You are welcome to provide your drink and arrange for your caterer or bar provider to serve it. Alternatively, local Bar services can be recommended, or you can choose your own provider (subject to approval). No corkage is payable all day, so you can have an open bar if you want one, provided all drinks are served.
A choice of round or rectangular tables is available at no extra charge, together with Chiavari chairs (limewash) and children's chairs. Garden seating and marble-topped garden tables are provided in the outside spaces. The Barns have a PA and sound system and full colour-changing LED lighting. Any band or DJ can bring their own systems or put their sound through the Barns' system. The South Barn is strung with thousands of fairy lights, and there are more along the front of the Barn and in the Barns' Courtyard so that nighttime is magical!
We love a winter wedding (particularly New Year's Eve). The Barns are double-skinned with a layer of cosy sheep's wool insulation and a very efficient heating system. One of the main heating pipes runs through the Barns courtyard seating, so you can sit outside and eat pizza even on a chilly evening (add cushions and throws for extra cosiness). Should it snow, we have a tractor and can pull you back to the village if required!
The Barns have a beautiful woodland ceremony glade with an oak lodge that provides cover for the couple, witnesses, registrars or celebrants, musicians, and readings, and the natural tree canopy offers some protection from the elements for guests. However, the West Barn is also set up for your guest numbers, should you need or prefer to move your ceremony inside at short notice.
The Barns have excellent acoustic properties, and live music sounds amazing. There is a sound limiter set above nightclub levels, designed to protect suppliers/vendors from hearing damage. A warning sign is activated before the sound cuts out for a few seconds, but it is rare for noise levels to reach this high, and further information can be provided. Music needs to stop by 12 midnight.
It is all down to preference. Good weather can never be guaranteed, but you can ensure your venue has space and contingency plans in place for cold or wet conditions. Otherwise, think about what will make you and your guests happy. Some couples are all about the outside spaces, so that May to September work best; others are keen to avoid excess heat, so that March/April or October/November weddings are perfect. If you are all about the music and dancing, then an earlier evening (September to April) works well, but cold, crisp winter days are magical too.
