Emily & Charlie: A Spring Wedding at Primrose Hill Farm

Emily & Charlie: A Spring Wedding at Primrose Hill Farm

Blue skies, blue details, blue delphiniums by the armful – Emily and Charlie’s spring wedding at Primrose Hill Farm embraced the season in full.

Romantic but never overdone, refined yet relaxed, with a dreamy palette that carried from ceremony to dinner to late-night martinis. The Dining Barn at this Oxfordshire gem deserves its own round of applause: golden light, far-reaching views, and that signature Primrose blend of style and ease.

We knew Primrose Hill Farm was the venue for us as soon as we stepped through the barn entrance. We chose the venue because it perfectly blended countryside charm with a modern, stylish feel.

The Venue

We knew Primrose Hill Farm was the venue for us as soon as we stepped through the barn entrance. We chose the venue because it perfectly blended countryside charm with a modern, stylish feel. The venue’s airy, open spaces created a relaxed yet elegant atmosphere, while the stunning views of the rolling countryside made it a truly unforgettable backdrop. It offered the ideal mix of rustic chic and contemporary design, feeling just right for our special day.

the fashion

Our big day fashion was all about timeless romance with a modern twist. I wore a fit-and-flare dress with a sweetheart neckline and soft beaded cup detailing, complemented by light blue-and-white flowers for a fresh, elegant feel. My bridesmaids and flower girls wore blue dresses that beautifully complemented the rest of the day, and my husband wore a timeless navy three-piece suit with a light-blue waistcoat. Our fashion choices were simple yet sophisticated, and felt perfectly suited to the countryside setting.

The Styling

We wanted the wedding décor to feel timeless but still romantic and elegant, with a classic colour palette of light blue and white. This was carried through everything, from our stationery and florals to the cake and the personalised tambourines that we gave to each guest. The tambourines were a real highlight! Everyone played them during our entrance to the wedding breakfast, and it was such a joyful, high-energy moment. The light in the Dining Barn was incredible, and our photographer, Lucy Darby, captured it perfectly. She even commented on how electric the atmosphere was and how it was one of the best wedding breakfast entrances she’d ever seen!

I wanted a soft, natural palette of dusky pale blues paired with creams and whites, and for the flowers to feel a little like a scented cottage garden.

The Flowers

We worked with Molly from Paddox Flowers, who completely understood the romantic, elegant aesthetic I had in mind. I wanted a soft, natural palette of dusky pale blues paired with creams and whites, and for the flowers to feel a little like a scented cottage garden. Molly used sweet peas, peonies, freesias, stocks, and delphiniums to create beautifully natural arrangements that were loose in shape yet incredibly refined. They also smelled amazing! A favourite detail was the tall vase of blue delphiniums in the Courtyard Barn, a lovely touch as guests arrived, and it set the colour tone for the rest of the day.

The Food & Drink

Our cake by Bloon and Co was a simple three-tier design, finished with white icing and a pale blue bow to tie in with the rest of the styling. It looked perfect set up in the Dining Barn and really added to the overall look of the space. The Kitchen at Primrose Hill Farm created a truly delicious menu, beautifully presented and tasting incredible. Every course was so thoughtfully put together and thoroughly enjoyed by all our guests.

During cocktail hour, we served his-and-hers cocktails: espresso martinis for me and passionfruit martinis for Charlie, each topped with a personalised cocktail topper. After dinner, guests were invited back out to the terrace to enjoy a martini or two in the last of the spring sunshine before we all moved into the Courtyard Barn for the first dance.

The Photographer

Lucy Darby was our photographer, and we couldn’t have been happier. She captured everything so beautifully, from the emotion of the ceremony to the energy of the dancefloor. She even managed to capture lots of lovely, natural couple images without us having to be away from our guests for long.

The setting really helped with this too; we had some gorgeous portraits taken by the trout pool, and in the golden evening light, it all felt really easy and relaxed. Lucy also made sure we had lots of photos with our older relatives, which was so important to us. We loved her approach and would recommend her in a heartbeat.

Best part of the day

There were so many! But one standout moment was after dinner, during the first few songs on the dance floor. Charlie had arranged a surprise saxophone player to join the DJ and make an entrance after our first dance – it was such a fun moment and got everyone in the party mood.

A little later, Charlie had a dance with his grandma, which was something he’d mentioned in his speech. There was even a moment when four generations from my side of the family were on the dance floor together, which was really special. But honestly, the best part was just standing there together, looking out at our guests, our families, the countryside views, and just soaking it all in.

From one couple to another

Be present. Everyone says it, but it’s true; the day flies by. Take a few quiet moments together to breathe, look around, and take it all in.
