There is a peaceful charm to The Great Barn Devon’s location. Tucked into the Teign Valley, it sits among rolling hills and mature woodland, just eight miles from Exeter. The setting offers quiet countryside with easy access to city connections. Stone bridges, winding lanes, and long views define the approach, giving guests a sense of arrival.
Though it feels remote, the venue is within reach of both road and rail routes, with Exeter St Davids railway station just 8 miles away. For those flying in, Exeter International Airport is located 15 miles to the east, while Bristol International Airport is 77 miles north.
The Great Barn Devon offers a choice of licensed and non-licensed spaces for ceremonies. The Great Barn itself is ideal for indoor vows, with its high ceilings, historic beams and dramatic lighting. For those seeking something open-air, the walled garden’s Arbour provides a private and sunlit setting.
Traditional church ceremonies can be held at the nearby Church of St. John the Baptist, a short walk from the barn. This historic church is one of Britain’s top 1,000 and sits at the heart of the local hamlet.
Celebrant-led ceremonies, religious blessings, and cultural rituals such as Chinese tea ceremonies are welcome. The team supports couples in creating celebrations that are personal, inclusive, and meaningful.
Once the ceremony concludes, The Great Barn Devon transitions smoothly into a lively reception space. After the meal, guests can enjoy a coffee in The Roundhouse or The West Barn while the main barn is prepared for dancing.
The barn’s open central area becomes the heart of the party, with ample room for dancing, live music or a DJ set. The nearby bar keeps drinks flowing without pulling guests away from the celebration.
Entertainment is flexible-anything from a solo acoustic act to a full band can be accommodated. For a simpler setup, the barn has built-in tech for playlists and lighting, supported by the venue’s team.
As the evening unfolds, the courtyard transforms into a relaxed outdoor retreat. Festoon lights and a glowing fire pit offer a quiet place for guests to pause under the stars.
Three self-catering cottages provide on-site accommodation for up to 30 guests. Just a short walk from the barns, these properties combine comfort with elegant styling.
Each cottage is booked as a whole, not by the room, so couples can allocate space as they wish. The team can liaise directly with guests for payment and planning.
Having guests stay close by adds to the sense of shared celebration, from morning coffee to late-night chats.
Food at The Great Barn Devon is central to the experience. The in-house chefs work with seasonal, local produce to create generous, flavour-forward menus. Options range from plated three-course meals to relaxed sharing feasts, and menus can be tailored to reflect your preferences.
A Friday night supper can kick things off, and a Sunday brunch or BBQ offers a relaxed close to the weekend. The food consistently earns praise, with many calling it the best they’ve had at a wedding.
Drinks are equally considered. The Bubbly & Bar Drinks Menu includes local spirits, ciders and wines. You can also bring your own drinks, with a £15 per head fee covering service, chilling, and waste.
Sustainability is built into how The Great Barn operates. Food is sourced with care-seasonal, local, and often organic-to reduce food miles and waste.
The historic barns have been restored to be energy-efficient, and waste is actively minimised through reuse, recycling, and reducing plastic use. Couples are encouraged to make environmentally mindful choices, like using biodegradable confetti.
On-site accommodation also helps reduce travel needs, letting guests enjoy the celebration without constant car use.
The surrounding Teign Valley offers quiet beauty, from woodland walks to sweeping moorland views. The village of Ashton is nearby, and Dartmoor National Park lies just to the west for those seeking more adventure.
Though rural in feel, The Great Barn is just 8 miles from Exeter. The city offers a base for visitors, featuring shopping, dining, and direct rail connections. It’s easily reached via the A38 and M5.

We were so incredibly lucky to spend our wedding day at The Great Barn. Emma, John and the rest of the team were so professional, and their efforts to give us the most special time were unmatched. We stayed on site for the whole weekend and felt like we had the royal treatment. The chef on site produced the most delicious food and as a chef myself I was honestly thrilled with the quality, portions, plating and flavour – so delicious. The wine selection from their supplier was extensive and fantastic – we had a truly indulgent and fabulous time. If you want to have an unforgettable, special, effortless, amazing and luxurious wedding, then book yours at The Great Barn. You won’t want to leave!

We honestly couldn’t have imagined a more perfect place to celebrate our wedding than The Great Barn.
From the moment we visited, we were blown away by its charm, beauty, and the peaceful countryside setting. The barn itself is absolutely stunning -spacious, rustic yet elegant, and full of character. It created the most romantic atmosphere and wowed every single one of our guests.
One of the biggest highlights for us and our guests was the food — it was absolutely exceptional. Every course was beautifully presented and full of flavour, and we had so many guests comment on how delicious and memorable the meal was. It really elevated the entire experience. We had so many compliments from guests who said it was one of the most beautiful venues they’d ever been to.

We looked at seven venues in and around Devon, but we fell in love with the Great Barn, and we knew this was the place for us. We are so pleased we chose here as we had the most fabulous and enjoyable wedding weekend. Everything, including the accommodation, was finished to a really high standard and had a luxurious yet relaxed feel. John, Emma, Ray and the team looked after us so well, and every detail was taken care of. We loved Head Chef Michael’s delicious food too! The whole team made our wedding experience feel really special. We have had so many compliments about the venue and the food from family and friends, and it was truly the perfect place for us to get married. We would highly recommend this gem of a venue to anyone!

Upon arrival at The Great Barn, we knew it was the place for us. The gorgeous wooden door to the barn is show-stopping, and the surrounding gardens and tall trees made it feel as if we were abroad. Location was also great, with the majority of our family and guests living locally. We loved the fact that people could stay the evening and make it more of a weekend event rather than just a day celebration. Emma and John made us feel so welcome from our first visit and allowed us to explore the venue as much as we wanted. It was only the second venue we had looked at, but we both felt it was special. It was the most amazing, special day filled with love, happiness and fantastic food. I wish I could do it all over again!
Married August 2024
We had the most amazing wedding day! The Great Barn team were so efficient and everything ran so smoothly. We handed everything over to the team on the Friday then could relax in the knowledge that they had everything under control. Our guests commented on the quality of the food, the beautiful setting and the incredible staff. Many said it was the best wedding food they had ever had, and the generous canapés were very much appreciated. Emma and John were so relaxed and easy-going throughout the planning process, and we felt really supported to shape the day as we wanted to. The Great Barn is the furthest thing from an impersonal wedding factory, which was so important to us.

We encourage our guests to use candles, but kindly request that they be enclosed in votives to prevent candle wax from dripping onto the tables or tablecloths. We have 20 storm lanterns, which you are most welcome to use for free. We can also advise on the best size of candle to buy. We allow sparklers, but sadly not fireworks.
