Houghton Lodge offers a historic and picturesque venue in Hampshire, overlooking the chalk stream of the River Test. Surrounded by panoramic views of water meadows and the Test Valley, the house is beautifully secluded, with no other dwellings in sight, providing an exclusive backdrop for couples seeking privacy and natural beauty.
The grounds invite exploration, from the ancient cob-walled garden and meticulously designed formal garden to the ornate oriental garden. Wildflower meadows, home to alpacas and sheep, add to the charm, while a sweeping front lawn leads to the river, complete with characterful fishing huts and even a woodland walk that reveals a hidden grotto!
As a cherished family home, they take immense pleasure in sharing the splendour of Houghton Lodge with couples embarking on their wedding journey.
Ceremonies at Houghton Lodge can take place in a variety of settings. The Orangery, filled with light and surrounded by the walled garden and patio, provides a modern yet elegant space. For more intimate options, the Cottage Orné offers two unique rooms: the Chinese Dining Room, adorned with hand-painted silk wallpaper and the Music Room, which exudes a romantic and artistic charm. Outdoor ceremony options are equally glorious, with the riverside landing stage or the rose arch within the walled garden.
Luxurious accommodation is available onsite in the ‘Apple Rooms,’ offering couples and their guests the chance to extend the festivities across a weekend.
The charming town of Stockbridge is just five minutes away and offers convenient local amenities.
Houghton Lodge is conveniently located at the heart of the Test Valley. It is easily accessible, (just 20 minutes) from Andover, Romsey, Salisbury, and Winchester and key road networks, including the M3, A303, A30, and A34. London is approximately 1.5 hours away by car, with Oxford an hour’s drive and Southampton and the New Forest within 45 minutes.
Winchester and Andover are the nearest mainline stations for train travel, connecting to London Waterloo.
We are endlessly re-living our incredible day and it’s no exaggeration to say you played a truly instrumental part in shaping such a stunning day for us, that you so so much! From the moment we first visited the gorgeous gardens, we were blown away by their beauty and most idyllic setting in the Hampshire countryside. Your home surely has to be one of the most stunning spots in England. Thank you so much for allowing us to create such a personal day, whilst also giving us superb recommendations. We really did have the ultimate dream team, and you were very much a huge part of it. Your friendly, accommodating, positive, excited, open and warm approach made it such a joy planning our wedding at Houghton Lodge Gardens.
We couldn’t have chosen a more picturesque place for our wedding and it really made our big day having such gorgeous photos in places like the beautiful walled garden and by the river full of swans. Just stunning!
Thank you for providing the perfect setting for our big day! From first making contact with you to the day itself everything was stress free and we know we’d made the right choice. We look forward to coming back for our anniversary every year… and of course tea and cake whenever we’re driving past!
I just wanted to say the biggest most enormous thank you for everything and for letting us use your beautiful home for our wedding – everyone was absolutely blown away by how stunning it was, and it was even better than I could’ve imagined it being, the wedding of my dreams! And just worked so well with the marquee and flowers and the food. Just perfect! Can’t believe how lucky we are to have had such a glorious day.
I truly couldn’t have asked for a better location, and am just eternally grateful to you and your husband for having us and all of our friends and family there.
We had such a fantastic day at Houghton Lodge – our ceremony by the river, the use of the walled garden for our drinks reception and the marquee on the water’s edge – everything was just perfect. So many of our guests have written to us to express how special the location was.
We really appreciated Sophie being so welcoming to us on our visits. Letting us put the dragon eggs by the topiary dragon was greatly appreciated and with many of our guests spotting them when wandering by the river made it all the more special. We couldn’t have wished for a better day and we are so grateful that Houghton Lodge was a part of it.
Booked at 4 weeks notice during changing Covid lockdown regulations we could not have had a more perfect venue for our big day… from the helpfulness of our host, Sophie, whose home our party of 25 invaded, to the location of the reception on the sunny terrace overlooking lawns sloping down to the river Test and to the luxury of the 6 beautifully appointed bedrooms, this is THE PLACE in Hampshire to consider for an unforgettable event whether of our size or a Society bash with marquees on the lawn.
Chris and I just wanted to say a HUGE thank you for allowing us to have our wedding at your beautiful home of Houghton Lodge.
The day was exactly how we’d hoped it would be; so many people commented on how beautiful the gardens were and it was the perfect location to create the relaxed, fun atmosphere that we hoped for.
I just wanted to say the BIGGEST thank you for this weekend and our day on Sunday and being so wonderful and accommodating and friendly and helpful. We had the most wonderful day and we were so grateful to spend it in your beautiful grounds.
Just a little note to say an enormous thank you for your families and Seth’s kindness and generosity towards us on our big day! WOW – honestly it really was perfect despite our stress levels. Thanks to all of you for making everything run so smoothly – and lastly thanks for providing such perfect and romantic weather! The Apple Rooms was also a joy as were our morning bacon sarnies in the cafe! We could not have asked for a more perfect reception so thanks for having such excellent quality suppliers under your belt.
I just wanted to say thank you so very much for all your help and support, and for allowing us to use your beautiful home and gardens as the backdrop for Alice and Ollie’s wedding. From the moment we contacted you, to re-plan the wedding, at relatively short notice, you could not have been more helpful. Your team were fabulous and nothing was too much trouble. We had a truly magical day, that just a few months ago, did not seem possible! Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts.
Marquees usually go up on a Thursday. We always suggest you come along on Thursday evening, and have drinks or a picnic by the river. Decorate on Friday, big day on Saturday and brunch on the terrace or in the walled garden on Sunday, or in your marquee. Time flies by so quickly so we want to encourage our couples to spend as much time here as possible and soak up the atmosphere!
We only host around 12 large marquee weddings and 5 small weddings a year. We prefer to keep it very exclusive and unique for couples, and do not host more than one wedding on a weekend. It is very much a family home and not over exploited for weddings so it is perfect for a couple who want to find somewhere very special.
We have a recommended list of local suppliers, all who have worked here. This list is extensive and covers everything you need for planning a wedding at Houghton Lodge. However you can also bring in your own suppliers. You may have your favourite caterer or marquee style provided by a different company who is not on our list.
You can never rely on the English weather, but at Houghton Lodge we have the perfect plan B incase of rain.
If you are having an outdoor wedding ceremony then we have a number of options including a riverside fishing hut (seats 6), the Conservatory (seats 30) and Orangery (seats 110) in the walled garden, and the Chinese Dining Room (seats 54) and Music Room (seats 38) in the house.
If you are having drinks and canapés in the walled garden then you have the use of The Orangery. This can take about 150 people standing. It is then just a bit of a walk to the shelter of your marquee for your wedding breakfast.
Yes, our luxury 'Apple Rooms' are perfect for couples and their close party looking to move in for a few days around their wedding, to be onsite for suppliers and make the most of our grounds after hours.
We have BBQ facilities which you are very welcome to use; feast on our patio in the Walled Garden exclusively in the evening for a special pre-celebration. The local pub is within walking distance and the on-site tearoom can do pizzas and evening meals too. Our housekeeper can supply delicious hamper breakfasts, or the on-site tearoom can provide pastries and bacon butties and mugs of steaming coffee in the morning, so all is covered!
On Sunday you are welcome to use the terrace of the house for breakfast, where you can reminisce the day before with your party. There is no check out time and no hurry to leave on a Sunday, so you really can make it a weekend full of celebrations! We have six luxury rooms called the Apple Rooms named after apple trees growing in the walled garden which are perfect for weddings. Couples usually move in on Friday and stay until Sunday morning.
We have a BBQ you are welcome to use and you are also welcome to use the tables and chairs in the walled garden in the evening. The rooms have a fridge, kettle, toaster and Grind coffee machine. The Boot Inn is also within walking distance.
There is no check out time - we just need a couple of rooms for our cleaner to get into on Sunday morning and the rest of the rooms won't be cleaned until Monday so there is no hurry to leave and there is usually one person who is up and packed by 11.00am which keeps the cleaner happy!
