Located on a picture-perfect private estate in the heart of the Lake District National Park, just a stone’s throw away from Windermere, there is so much to do on their doorstep, from exploring the chocolate-box towns and villages of Ambleside, Bowness and Grasmere to embarking on a romantic lake cruise, plus there’s over 3,000km of walking trails for you and your beau to discover together.
Gilpin Lake House is conveniently located. The nearest railway station, Windermere, is just four miles away (2.5 hours from London), and the M6 Jct 36 is within a 20-minute drive.
I do not know where to begin when writing this review because it is hard to put into words. We have just returned from our wedding, where we had three days of exclusive use of the Lake House and then a night in a Spa Lodge, and we are gutted to be back to reality.
Since booking, the Lake House Manager has gone above and beyond to ensure our entire stay and wedding was perfect. I have never met a manager and team more dedicated, kind and happy to work as the staff at the Gilpin – both in the Lake House and at the main Hotel.
The wedding breakfast was superb, and the Michelin star restaurant was phenomenal. We feel genuinely spoilt to have been able to have the experience we have had.
This is not just a business, hotel or restaurant… it is a place where memories are made that last a lifetime. We are already planning our trip back because of the excitement of visiting this magical place and seeing the staff, whom we now class as friends.
Just stunning. Gilpin Lake House, with its outstandingly beautiful surroundings and luxurious and heart-warming interior, is supported by a team of staff that underpins everything that made our stay and wedding experience truly memorable. We would also like to extend our warmest thanks to all the staff we encountered, who were all an absolute delight to share our family experience. This place will not disappoint; it is simply amazing.
I spoke with the Wedding Planner in February this year to discuss our wish to have an elopement wedding. We spoke on the phone, where we discussed dates and options, and we secured a date in August. Planning was so easy, with the wedding planner providing recommendations for photographers and hair/makeup, which was great, particularly when we were not from the area and didn’t have any pre-existing contacts. She booked our meals in advance and provided a basic itinerary for our stay, which was perfect, as we needed a plan but wanted a relaxed day without real formality.
We were warmly welcomed when we arrived at the Lake House, and that lovely, relaxed service continued throughout our stay. The staff are down-to-earth, and we honestly felt at home straight away. The grounds are beautiful, and after exploring, we knew we’d immediately made the right decision.
Our wedding ceremony was relaxed and precisely as planned. Staff were on hand to ensure all ran smoothly, but they were non-intrusive, which was perfect. The food is incredible in both restaurants, too. We were so sad to leave, as we’d all had the most fabulous few days at The Gilpin, and honestly, we cannot wait to return.
No, they are also happy to host more intimate weddings where you do not need to hire their venue exclusively. If you and your partner wish to elope, their "You & Me" package would be the perfect match. If you would like to invite some of your nearest and dearest loved ones, they also have a "You, Me & Them" package (for up to four guests). For these packages, all they ask is for couples to stay at Gilpin Hotel or Gilpin Lake House at their wedding.
Not at all! The beauty of our Gilpin Lake House is that it can be booked for exclusive use for up to 60 guests, even more, if you wish to hire a marquee, tipi or yurt. By exclusively hiring the venue, you have access to all of the fabulous facilities, including the cosy bar and lounge, spacious and stylish function room with balcony, beautifully appointed bedrooms (sleeping up to 16 guests), spa with indoor pool, hot tubs, sauna and of course their 100 acres of gorgeous gardens, woodland and the spectacular tarn. Not forgetting their incredible team, who will be on hand to cater to your every whim, from delicious dining with a Michelin-starred menu to helping with those little touches that make your wedding so uniquely yours. Their home becomes your home.
