Cothelstone Estate is a 1,500-acre family-run estate at the foot of the Quantock Hills in Somerset – one of England’s most quietly spectacular corners of countryside. The estate has been in the same family since 1791 and is managed holistically, with an organic farm, ancient woodlands and diverse wildlife habitats woven through the landscape.
Cothelstone has two distinct and beautiful settings. At Cothelstone Manor, a Grade II* listed Elizabethan manor, weddings take place in the 17th century walled garden, with views over the Gatehouse, Manor and Church and up to the Quantock Hills. Couples bring their own marquee and make the space entirely their own.
At Cothelstone Lake, set in over 40 acres of private parkland, a stunning sailcloth marquee sits on the water’s edge, with panoramic views across the hills. Whimsical, secluded and completely hidden from the outside world.
Both venues offer exclusive use, total privacy and that rare sense of arriving somewhere that truly belongs to you for the weekend.
Cothelstone is home to the 12th-century Church of St Thomas of Canterbury, a Grade I-listed parish church seating up to 146 guests, a stone’s throw from Cothelstone Manor.
For couples choosing a celebrant-led ceremony, both venues offer beautiful options. At Cothelstone Manor, couples can exchange vows in the front courtyard, back courtyard or walled garden, each with its own character and outlook. At Cothelstone Lake, ceremonies take place on the lawn at the water’s edge, with panoramic views across the parkland and Quantock Hills as your backdrop.
Cothelstone is not licensed for civil ceremonies. Couples wishing to legally marry outside of the church will need to complete their formalities at a local register office beforehand.
At Cothelstone Manor, the drinks reception naturally flows through the estate’s most beautiful spaces. Guests typically gather in the front or back courtyard – both framed by the Manor’s striking Elizabethan architecture – before moving up to the walled garden for the wedding breakfast.
At Cothelstone Lake, couples can choose to begin their reception on the lawn directly in front of the marquee and lake, with the parkland and Quantock Hills stretching out behind them – or to make use of the Manor’s courtyards for a drinks reception, before guests make their way down to the Lake for the wedding breakfast.
Cothelstone Manor sleeps up to 14 guests across seven beautifully appointed bedrooms, with the option to add two additional single beds for a total of 16. Each room is decorated with earthy tones, natural textures and a considered blend of heritage and contemporary design. Four bedrooms are en-suite, with the remaining rooms sharing bathrooms. The Manor’s living spaces include a grand dining hall, a drawing room, a billiard room, a snug and a fully equipped kitchen – all of which are yours for the whole weekend, creating a relaxed house-party feel that extends long beyond the day itself.
For guests beyond the Manor’s walls, West Somerset is exceptionally well served for nearby accommodation, with a wealth of options within 15 minutes of the estate. They share a curated list of recommended local places to stay with each couple, making it easy for guests to find a place that suits them.
Couples have complete freedom to bring in their own caterer and create a menu entirely on their own terms. Set within a family-run organic estate, there is no shortage of inspiration for seasonal, locally rooted menus. For those who would like a little steering, they have a curated list of recommended local suppliers who know and love the estate – but the choice is always yours.
Couples are welcome to supply their own reception drinks and wine for the wedding breakfast with no corkage charge.
At Cothelstone Lake, the bar is run in-house throughout the celebration. At Cothelstone Manor, couples run their own bar, giving complete flexibility over what is served and how.
Cothelstone Estate has been in the same family since 1791, and sustainability is not a policy; it is simply how the estate has always been run. The 1,500-acre estate is managed organically and regeneratively, with nature, heritage and community at its heart.
Across the farmland, a mosaic of floristic margins, wild bird seed cover, beetle banks and bumblebee mixes creates rich habitats for insects, birds and plants. Ancient woodlands band the higher slopes, home to red and roe deer, rare fungi and an abundance of native species.
When it comes to weddings, they recycle everything that can be recycled and actively work with – and recommend – suppliers who share their commitment to treading lightly. Every celebration at Cothelstone should feel as considered and connected to this place as the estate itself.
Cothelstone sits within the Quantock Hills National Landscape – England’s first designated National Landscape – an area that remains genuinely unspoilt and relatively undiscovered. The hills offer an extraordinary variety of terrain within a compact area: open heathland, ancient coombs, moorland and a dramatic coastline along the Bristol Channel, all within easy reach of the estate. It is the kind of landscape that rewards those who find it and makes for a truly special setting in which to celebrate.
Cothelstone Manor is situated in the hamlet of Cothelstone, Somerset, TA4 3DS, at the foot of the Quantock Hills.
As a marquee venue, we only host weddings from May to September each year.
