Barnfield Weddings sits on a small working family farm on the edge of Sible Hedingham in North Essex. With fewer than ten weddings each year, the venue offers exclusivity, privacy, and a natural rhythm that feels both intimate and expansive. Its meadows, woodlands, and lakes create a landscape of quiet drama, where wildflowers and winding pathways soften wide rural views.
Practicalities are already in place, including three-phase power, a reliable water supply, strong, hard-ground access, and generous parking. With good connections by car, rail, and air, it is as accessible as it is rural-ideal for couples seeking something beautiful, romantic, and slightly wild.
Three ceremony spaces are offered, each with its own character.
The venue is not licensed for legal marriages, so most couples choose to complete the official paperwork separately and hold their personalised celebration at Barnfield.
Receptions at Barnfield are shaped entirely by you. Lakeside meadows provide the main backdrop, where tipis, stretch tents, or marquees rise against views of water and open countryside.
Exclusive use ensures complete privacy until the 11pm licence ends. On-site camping or glamping means the party can continue informally.
On-site, a converted barn offers self-catering space for up to six guests, with camping and glamping options also available.
Nearby, Brickwall Farm provides two converted barn cottages just 400m from the venue. Both are dog-friendly and include open-plan kitchens, rustic interiors, and patios.
Shared facilities include:
Guests can roam 56 acres of meadows and woodland, home to rare-breed cattle, sheep, and abundant wildlife.
Dining at Barnfield is entirely flexible, with no in-house caterer. Couples may choose full-service caterers, informal food trucks, or festival-style setups.
Options include:
The venue provides all essential infrastructure-power, water, and access-making it simple for suppliers to set up. The team can recommend trusted local caterers if needed.
Barnfield is rooted in sustainable farming. Solar panels, a biomass boiler, and its own water supply reduce its footprint, while over 3,000 trees have been planted in the past 30 years. No pesticides are used, and biodiversity thrives, from orchids and owls to snakes and dragonflies.
Specific commitments include:
Barnfield sits in the Colne Valley, where rolling countryside meets historic villages, meadows, and waterways.
Highlights include:
Sible Hedingham itself has everyday essentials-shops, post office, pharmacy, butcher, bakery, pub, and fire station. For city trips, Chelmsford, Colchester, and Cambridge are 40-50 minutes away.
The maximum capacity is 120, and the capacity otherwise is determined by the size of the tent you choose and the types of tents hired (we offer packages with various sizes).
There are numerous options, and we would be happy to discuss them with you. Briefly though, these vary from the caterers having their own tent and hiring in kitchen equipment (very routine for caterers) so that they can cook 'in the field' to produce anything from sharing platters to a 3-course meal with canapés, or you could choose anything from barbecue, hog roast or food trucks.
There are different options for drinks; if you want to supply the drinks yourself, we recommend hiring bar staff to help manage and serve these. Bar companies offer a range of packages from running a stocked bar, serving drinks you have supplied, a pay bar, a bar where you give your guests their first drink and after that they pay, for example. What works best for you will depend partly on your budget and your crowd. We don't charge corkage as a venue.
Yes! We offer space for up to 20 camping pitches at a small nightly rate. We can also recommend glamping packages for your guests, where they can, for example, book their luxury tent (complete with a proper bed) online. Some suppliers can provide showers and toilets.
Live amplified music must stop by 10pm, and other amplified music by 11pm (due to licensing restrictions).
It means the venue will only be used by you and your party for the duration of the wedding, from two days before when your tipis or other tent(s) are set up, until the end of the day after.
There is an uneven track from the car park to the space used by the tipis or other tents. If necessary, it is possible to drive guests directly through to the tipis (however, a car can't be parked there). It is possible to hire mobile luxury toilets that are wheelchair-friendly. Please check with us if this is a requirement.
Yes, definitely!
The basic price includes venue hire, power, and water. You arrange the rest using the suppliers you choose (subject to approval). This way, you can design your wedding the way YOU want it. We offer a list of recommended suppliers, which may be helpful.
We recommend having someone to assist you on the day, allowing you to fully enjoy it and spend quality time with friends and family. This might just be a very good, very organised friend or family member, or you could invest in a wedding planner or on-the-day coordinator.
You can choose either 'Dry Hire' (for exclusive use of the venue with water and power) or packages that include tipis or stretch tents, along with furniture, flooring, lighting, and a few other extras.
Prices remain the same throughout the seasons, with no variation by month; the cost for the venue remains constant. The cost of packages will vary depending on the type and size of tipi or stretch tent you choose.
Yes! We love dogs. There are sheep and cows on the farm, so we kindly request that they are kept on leads and that their waste is cleared up after use. We can recommend options for dog care during your wedding if you would find it useful.
