Nestled in the heart of East London, Abney Park Chapel finds its place between the charming Stoke Newington Church Street and Stoke Newington High Street. This hidden gem is nestled within the expansive 12.5-hectare haven of Abney Park. This historic, biodiverse, and tranquil green space proudly carries a Grade II listing on Historic England’s register of parks and gardens, standing as one of the magnificent seven cemeteries in London. Adorned with elaborate monuments and ancient trees, this location provides a uniquely serene atmosphere for your event, merging history and nature in one remarkable setting.
Abney Park Chapel, a magnificent Grade II listed structure, is a testament to enduring history and recent renovations. Originally designed by William Hosking, it serves as Europe’s oldest surviving non-denominational chapel, with completion dating back to 1842.
Recent restoration works have breathed new life into this architectural marvel. Notable additions include new stained glass windows, mezzanine level seating, modern flooring, enhanced toilet facilities, and updated electrics and lighting. This vibrant venue marries the charm of yesteryears with contemporary touches, creating an ambience perfect for celebrating your special day.
Yes, we have a premises licence.
The venue will be able to offer chairs, a stage, LED candle decor, Bluetooth speakers for music, a projector and screen, and a portable PA system. The venue provides a standalone space with no additional prep areas or a kitchen, so it is only suitable for cold finger food or canapé catering. Tables are not available at this venue.
There is no outside event space available. Whilst you and your guests can be outside, all service and activity remain inside the chapel, and marquees are not allowed.
Abney Park and Cemetery is one of London’s Magnificent 7, bursting with history. Although it is no longer an active working cemetery, it is the resting place for 200,000 people and a biodiversity haven, home to many rare wildlife species. For this reason, we only allow natural petal confetti - dried or fresh.
No vehicles are permitted into the site; the entrance is on Stoke Newington High Street, and the walk to Abney Park Chapel is along Chapel Ride, which is a 3-4 minute walk. There is a pay and display car park called Wilmer Place 350m from the main entrance, and Stoke Newington rail station is 160m from the main entrance.
