About
Setting

Ryedale Folk Museum presents a vibrant connection to history, with buildings and collections that embody the rich heritage of the Ryedale area. This open-air museum sits in the picturesque village of Hutton-le-Hole, surrounded by the breathtaking countryside of the North York Moors National Park. Over six acres, it showcases stories from a rural way of life, spanning from the Iron Age to the 1950s.

Ceremony

The Museum offers a variety of charming ceremony locations for elopements, weddings, or vow renewals. Each unique setting creates an intimate atmosphere, with the largest space accommodating up to 58 guests:

  • Manor House: A stunning thatched 16th-century building for up to 58 guests.
  • Iron Age Roundhouse: A replica dwelling with curved walls and a central fireplace for up to 28 guests.
  • The Pavilion: A versatile wooden space with a vintage feel, also suitable for daytime receptions, hosting up to 28 guests.
  • Daylight Photographic Studio: The oldest surviving example in England, perfect for up to 10 guests.
  • Crofter’s Cottage: A reconstruction of a Medieval crofter’s abode for up to 10 guests.
  • Stang End: An 18th-century cottage with a thatched roof and feature fireplace for up to 8 guests.
  • Pickard’s Cottage: A Victorian-esque kitchen setting for up to 3 guests.
  • The High Shop: A nostalgic 1950s village store for up to 2 guests.
  • The Undertaker’s Office: A quirky choice for the adventurous couple, accommodating up to 2 guests.

The Museum is open from mid-March to mid-November, with all bookings concluding by 5pm.

Reception

For intimate celebrations, the Museum provides informal reception spaces, accommodating up to 28 guests. Bright Raven’s can host the couple plus 22 guests, while larger gatherings can be held in The Pavilion. Couples may bring their own refreshments, pack a picnic, or arrange catering for a buffet or afternoon tea.

When booking Exclusive Use of the Museum, the Manor House can be used as a reception venue for up to 58 guests. Mobile catering options, such as food trucks or bars, are also available on Fridays.

Local Area

Hutton-le-Hole enchants visitors with its chocolate-box charm, characterised by sandstone cottages and the beck flowing along the village green. This idyllic setting invites exploration within the North York Moors National Park, offering a picturesque backdrop for any celebration.

Getting There

The venue is conveniently located an hour’s drive north of York and an hour’s drive inland from the coastal towns of Scarborough and Whitby.

“

We just wanted to say a massive thank you for making us feel so comfortable and welcome at the Museum for our elopement wedding. It was everything we hoped for and more.

Married July 2023

Charli & Amy

We chose to get married at Ryedale Folk Museum because we were looking for somewhere a bit different, quirky, intimate and beautiful! RFM ticked all of our boxes on these scores. We absolutely fell in love with the place when we visited, so tranquil and so very interesting! Being able to have our dogs was the deciding factor and the icing on the (wedding) cake!

What we loved about the Manor House was the atmosphere, the sense of history and how lovely it looked decorated for the ceremony.

The highlight of our time at the Museum was again, being able to take our dogs with us to join in the ceremony, even though they did kind of steal the show!
The staff were so welcoming and helped us truly relax and enjoy our day – Kirsty was brilliant, putting us at our ease, ensuring the day went smoothly, and even running to retrieve my bouquet which I’d left in the ladies!

We had such an amazing day, our guests loved it, and we certainly achieved our aim of having a fun and relaxing time – one of our guests said it was the best wedding she’d ever been to. Choosing Ryedale Folk Museum for our wedding venue was the best decision and made for the perfect start to our married life. We highly recommend RFM to any couple choosing their wedding venue.

We had a wonderful day, thank you. And thanks to your team for helping to make it all go smoothly. Thank you also for the help with umbrellas, with the weather taking a turn for the worst that weekend!

Everyone loved the setting and a lot are keen to visit again too. We will be popping in a lot more frequently now, as it will always be a special place for us.

Married July 2024

Rob & Louise

We wanted a small, intimate elopement in a rustic, oldy-worldy, quiet, picturesque setting. The Museum itself is a beautiful place to visit, and the views around it are stunning. We both felt so calm and relaxed there, and the people who volunteer there are so genuinely lovely, welcoming and supportive. We knew from that first visit, this was where we wanted to say “I do”.

What we loved about Pickard’s Cottage was the charming character, rich history and the uniqueness of it.

The highlight of our time at the Museum was becoming Man and Wife in our version of the perfect place, with wonderful people to share those moments with.

I hope more couples choose the museum for their weddings. Not only because of how lovely you all are and how great the place is. But, so it can support what you all do further.

Anie & Joe

We had an elopement ceremony (with our dog!) at Pickard’s Cottage. The whole day was absolutely wonderful from start to finish! You all really couldn’t have done any more! We spent the whole day in the museum and had a home-baked and prepared picnic in the orchard.

We can’t thank you and your team enough for making our day so special.

We couldn’t think of a better venue, and we love how it felt exclusively ours for the ceremony and reception. The children and the dog had a great time, too!

FAQs
Can we have exclusive use of Ryedale Folk Museum?

Yes - on Fridays.

Exclusive Use of the Museum buildings and grounds is a fantastic option if you have up to 58 guests, wish to use your chosen ceremony location and other areas for a reception, or just fancy a bit of exclusivity.

- Availability: Fridays only, mid-March to mid-November.

- Hire period: maximum 5-hour hire period between 9am to 5pm from 1 April to 30 September (latest ceremony time 4pm) and 9am to 4pm from 1 October to 31 March (latest ceremony time 3pm).

Can we have our reception with you?

Informal reception options (celebratory drinks, wedding cake, cold buffets, and afternoon teas) can be added to any wedding or ceremony booking. They can be hosted in Bright Raven's for up to 22 guests or The Pavilion for up to 28 guests. The Manor House can be used for receptions with up to 58 guests when booking Exclusive Use (Fridays only).

Want a banquet fit for a Tudor in the Manor House, a '40s tea dance in the Pavilion, or a hog roast in the Iron Age Roundhouse? We are happy to discuss the possibilities and practicalities, so contact us!

Can we dress/decorate the location we have selected for our ceremony?

We cannot deny that there are limitations in terms of dressing/decorating the ceremony locations-we have a duty to care for and protect our museum collections, which include the original buildings. That said, wherever possible, we will work with you to realise your vision-do get in touch to discuss your ambitions.

Can we bring the dog(s)?

Yes, the Museum is a dog-friendly venue and dogs are allowed within the buildings. We just ask that you respect our rule that dogs must always be kept on a lead and under control. It is worth noting that we have our own animals on site. There are plenty of good options for dog walking routes nearby, as well as groomers, sitters and walkers.
