Dunbar, a coastal town midway between Edinburgh and Berwick-Upon-Tweed on Scotland’s East Coast, has a rare charm. Known fondly as “Sunny Dunny” for its high sunshine record, it offers rugged shorelines, wide skies, and peaceful countryside.
The Harbour Chapel sits quietly near the historic twin harbours, just moments from where castle ruins meet colourful fishing boats and stacked lobster creels. This picturesque setting offers naturally beautiful photo opportunities in every direction.
The Harbour Chapel offers two distinct settings for ceremonies, each with its own atmosphere.
Inside, the restored chapel features original pews forming a natural aisle leading to a carved oak pulpit. Stained-glass windows from St Giles’ Cathedral filter the light, creating a quietly dramatic space for exchanging vows.
For those drawn to the coast, outdoor ceremonies can be arranged at the award-winning Dunbar Battery, just two minutes from the chapel. With views over the sea and flanked by castle ruins, guests sit on sandstone tiers surrounded by coastal planting and public artworks.
Whether indoors or by the harbour, both spaces reflect the chapel’s thoughtful character and connection to the sea.
The Harbour Chapel moves effortlessly from ceremony to celebration.
Once vows are exchanged, the contemporary bar welcomes guests with drinks and conversation-sparkling wine, craft ales, whisky, or fine gins. Meanwhile, the chapel is quietly transformed into a warm, candlelit dining space. Oak tables are laid with care, ready for your wedding meal.
As daylight fades, the space shifts once more, now alive with music, dancing, and the quiet joy of a shared occasion.
There is no accommodation on site, but the surrounding area offers a wide range of places to stay. Options include coastal cottages, barn conversions, boutique hotels, and traditional inns-many within walking distance or a short drive.
The Harbour Chapel team is happy to recommend trusted local favourites to help couples and guests find the right fit.
All food is prepared in-house by an experienced team using high-quality seasonal ingredients from trusted East Lothian suppliers. Menus can be fully customised or chosen from a range of curated options.
Expect fresh seafood, prime meats, organic produce, artisan cheeses, and baked goods that reflect the best of the region.
The bar stocks local beers from Belhaven Brewery and cider from Thistly Cross, both based in Dunbar. A thoughtfully selected wine list is complemented by a wide range of Scottish spirits, including local gin and Glenkinchie whisky.
There is a clear commitment to local sourcing and community support. The Harbour Chapel works with regional suppliers, employs local staff, and donates a portion of Dunbar Battery hire fees to the Dunbar Harbour Trust.
House wines are chosen in part for their environmental impact, with proceeds supporting global ocean conservation projects.
The venue also provides affordable space for community groups and participates in local events.
East Lothian offers over 40 miles of coastline, golden beaches, rolling countryside, and some of the world’s best links golf courses. Dunbar, just 30 minutes from Edinburgh, is an ideal base for exploring nearby towns such as North Berwick, East Linton, and Gullane.
Dunbar Railway Station is a five-minute walk from the venue. It has direct connections to Edinburgh and London. Buses also run frequently from the High Street.
Guests are encouraged to use public transport or local taxis. Public car parks are nearby, though limited during peak times. Special arrangements and accessible parking can be arranged.
We love your furry companions as much as you do and appreciate that they are part of your family. However, dogs do not enjoy being in our venue, so we ask that they not be brought into the venue.
The Chapel dates back to 1764, once a religious place of worship serving the harbour community of Dunbar. Although many original features remain, the chapel is no longer a religious place of worship and welcomes people of all faiths, backgrounds and beliefs.
