Appleby Castle is situated just 15 miles from the English Lake District and deep in the heart of the Eden Valley, nestling alongside the meandering River Eden. This spectacular motte and bailey castle has been held by the Kings of England and Scotland and boasts one of the few remaining intact Norman keeps.
The Castle is set right at the peak of Appleby, with the village surrounding its walls – it’s just a short stroll into the village for those wishing to experience all that the village has to offer.
Located just off the A66, which links the M6 and the M1, if travelling by car. The Castle is within a 10 minute walk of Appleby Train Station which is linked only by a transfer at Penrith Station.
Appleby Castle has stood for over 900 years and fought in my battles. As you wander through the castle, you get a feel of its rich history.
The décor of the castle is split in to three parts: Part One, the ground floor is of the Tudor period, kept to a basic white wash style and holds the impressive Old Great Hall with the original Portcullis entrance and medieval kitchen turned Tavern. Part two, the first and second floor is of the 16th Century, with Oak clad walls, 7ft fireplaces and displays Lord Cliffords Armour of majestic blue and gold. The rooms are of the same statement with the majority of them consisting of four poster beds and tapestry walls. The last part, is the servants quarters, on the last level of the castle. These rooms are the quirkiest of all, kept simple in design, the uneven floors and windows up with the gods make it for the most memorable of experiences.
It is on this level you will find the honeymoon suite, largest of all the rooms, it consists of super king wooden bed frame over looked by the eagles, his and her bath sinks, a roll top bath and a view of the mountains and hills that enclose Appleby in the valley.
Weddings at Appleby Castle are over looked by the Wedding Coordinator, who will have consistent communication with the bridal parties during the planning process and on the day will be the point of call for any companies needing to set up. Therefore allowing the couple to relax and enjoy their day as King and Queen of their own castle.
