When I read through Emma’s words below I caught myself smiling, nodding along with agreement and feeling a whole heap of happiness inside. Not only does Emma, the documentary photographer behind Heart Full of Tea, have a way with words but she also has quite the gift when it’s comes to capturing people and moments.

Based in the beautiful South West, Emma works with just a handful of couples each year and once you’ve browsed her portfolio you’ll want to be one of the lucky few, believe me.

Notes from Heart Full of Tea

Emma:

I’m a portrait, wedding and travel documentary photographer. I have been shooting weddings for nearly 5 years. I live in Bath with my husband, sleepy tabby cat and manic lurcher. I got into photography when I was in art college, studying Graphic Design, however, I am pretty much self-taught. I have since moved onto careers that bring the best out in my creativity. This is reflected in my work and how I document life. I love finding ‘that light’ and capturing how raw life can be. There is always something good lost amongst the noise and I believe that life is full of dark days and sunny days. Either way, it all deserves to be captured.

I think it’s really important that you find your match with a photographer, it makes your wedding day so much more easier and expressive if you can let go and have a good hug with someone you trust! I love to shoot couples that ooze passion, that dance like no-ones watching and prefer vendors that express their relationship outwardly. On your day you should be relaxed and your cheeks ache from constant smiling and laughing. I am committed to this and the start of your beautiful journey. I love my job and I work hard to ensure that on your day you can just let go, breathe and have fun!

I generally shoot documentary photography, meaning I take a step back and watch you, your friends and family tell the story. I have an obsession with light, be that harsh sunshine or dark shadows. All of which can create an atmospheric photo. I don’t have bags of kit, as I personally don’t think you need it and I’m not the kind of photographer that will become hung up about technical settings. I shoot where I can with natural light and use an on camera flash for the evening celebrations. That is what I utilise the most from your day, the light and your story.

Most people aren’t comfortable in front of a camera lens, I haven’t met anyone that doesn’t have a love-hate relationship with having their photo taken! Therefore, as much as possible I work a few steps away from you and do as little posing as possible to get the best out of you both naturally. Being in this wonderful industry for the last 5 years I have plenty of tips I’ve learnt to make your day more relaxed and stress free. I’m a photographer, counsellor, tissue supplier, dress fixer, false eyelash corrector, mint supplier kind of gal. Make sure you utilise this on your day!

I’ve pretty much seen it all and offer this advice freely when it comes to planning. The best days I have had the pleasure of being part of, are those where the couple have gone to town on reflecting their personality into the day. Also, those with the least travel (i.e from churches to venues etc.) are the least stressful, be aware of what will add to your stress throughout the day on the lead up before hand. Go with your gut instinct, if it’s bothering you get rid of it! You should be able to relax and celebrate the human you are about to hold in your arms and marry.
