Unleash your Inner Bohemian – Top Tips from The Boho Booth

Written by Emma Hla

Dreaming of escaping the daily grind of conventional living in search of a more free-spirited lifestyle..? Yep, us too! While running away to the hippie hills may be off limits, injecting a little Bohemia into your life is a great way to express your inner soul.

Bohemian Beats is one of our fave venue style categories and if you find yourself being drawn to these barefoot locations then Zoe Wells, founder of The Boho Booth, shares her seven steps to being more boho.

Unleash Your Inner Bohemian

Zoe:

Rock the boho look, Bohemian fashion is a means of expression and nothing says boho chic better than braided hair, floaty florals, ripped denim, fringing and brightly coloured clothing embellished with glitter and jewels.

Go barefoot when the weather permits, kick off your shoes and enjoy the freedom of going barefoot – not only is it good for your feet, it’s great for the soul.

Embrace the great outdoors. A walk in nature is often referred to as the best medicine. Escaping the four walls and electrical havens of our homes and offices for a stroll in the park is a sure-fire way to de-stress and reconnect with our inner selves.

Hire a campervan. The iconic campervan is the vehicle of choice for Bohemians. Swap weekends spent shopping for unnecessary possessions and hire a campervan – spontaneous road trips in a VW will boost your boho power and life no end.

Visit a festival! Festivals are the quintessential destination for Bohemians, a place where ‘anything goes.’ Every summer, hundreds of festivals can be found throughout the UK with something to suit everyone so book your tickets, pack a few essential belongings and set off for a few days of unadulterated fun and freedom.

Learn macramé. Bohemians love handcrafting and macramé is a really simple and fun way to get creative. From wall hangings and plant holders to clothing and jewellery, modern macramé has become a signature style of the boho home.

Revive old records. Modern technology may have made life easier but nothing beats the authentic sound of a vintage record player. Rummage through the record collections of your parents or local charity shops, sit back and relax to the sounds of times gone by.

Notes from The Boho Booth

The shoot was a take on an American/Australian styled vintage boho wedding.

The campsite has never been used for a shoot before and the owners mentioned how the venue gets the most beautiful pink and purple sunsets in September. This became the colour scheme focus for our shoot. Shoots are usually taken during the day so it was nice to shoot later in the day to catch the sunset and although we only got a few pics the sunset was exactly as promised! The pink/purple ombre sunset colours were reflected in the stationary, cake and dresses.

The styling was relaxed and fun with a laid-back vibe, casual boots and bare feet! Our dresses were from Spell – an Australian label popular with celebrities including Sienna Miller and Kate Moss (famous for its boho styling). We wanted to use mismatched dresses in a different style for a new take on bridesmaid’s dresses using pieces from their newest range (Babushka) but kept the look consistent with matching prints and necklaces. The look was natural and fun.

A theme of entertainment ran throughout the shoot with our Photo Booth, dress up, glitter make–up and a beautifully decorated table complete with a vintage style record player. The flowers used comprised mostly of English wildflowers, fresh hops, Tanacetum Daisies, Astilbe, Larkspur, Ammi, Limonium, Eustoma and Astrantia. All of the delicate blooms were mostly sourced directly from the hedgerow by our wonderful florist Becky at Florae Foray, with larger headed white garden roses as the focal flower in keeping with the natural aesthetic.

The garlands that we used on the split screen camper-van were made using an Indian threading technique using carnations – we wanted to experiment with a different look to the traditional bumper garlands that you usually see.

As the light disappeared we just had time for some beautiful pictures of our models in a Native American headdress and iconic peacock chair.
