Paris in the Autumn

Written by Emma Hla
Last weekend the boy and I left our Brighton townhouse and swapped it for a studio apartment made for two in Le Marais, our favourite little corner of Paris…

Now a professional photographer I am not, but I do love to capture our adventures. However, whilst we were away it poured with torrential rain so the opportunity to whip the camera out was limited! But I thought I’d share a few of the pics I did manage to snap and some of the places we love to go…

home from home

We first visited Paris together earlier this year on a rather adventurous trip around Europe. We turned up in the city with nothing but a backpack, a map and a romantic notion of seeing where life took us.

Well, it took us to Le Marais.

It was as simple and as lucky as plonking my finger in the middle of the map that lay before me and so our fate was sealed… When planning this trip we knew we wanted to stay in the same area as it has a lovely home-from-home feel, the boutiques and restaurants are also pretty epic. Think gorgeous independent lifestyle shops, fashionista-worthy designer brands and traditional brasseries with a modern edge.

We chose to rent an apartment for the three days we were there through airbnb and it was the perfect choice – behind rather unassuming heavy burgundy doors lay a bijou, rustic studio that would be our base camp.

monmartre

This trip we headed North to Monmartre, stopping on the way at the infamous Amélie Cafe – Café des Deux Moulins – for patisserie and the obligatory morning coffee.

It was Saturday morning so the area was bustling with tourists, not one for huge crowds we flitted between the little alleys, took in the beauty of the Sacré Cœur and enjoyed the view out across the city. A short walk down the steps and we came across a beautiful carousel.

I wanted to get on it. The boy did not.

jardin du luxembourg

Oh I do love a good jardin to stroll around and Jardin du Luxembourg is quite the beauty. This pretty parkland is famed for its calmness and is situated in the 6th, close to the Panthéon. It’s also well known for attracting children to sail boats on the waters of the fountain and this time round I was lucky enough to catch this little tradition in action. It was all a bit cute.

cafe charlot

Our favourite brasserie in Le Marais… This little hub seems to be the stylish locals’ choice for aprés work drinks and we first found it back in January and spent each frosty night sat under the warmth of the heaters drinking delicious local wine. This time round was no different.

Cafe Charlot seemed to bookend our days… Petit déjeuner of warm breads and sticky jam in the morning and our drinking den for the evening.

merci merci

Quite possibly one of the coolest lifestyle shops I’ve visited. Ever.

I couldn’t come to Paris and not pop by Merci Merci and snap the obligatory photo of it’s little red fiat. Inside it’s an Aladdins cave of fashion, design and everything in between. There is also a gorgeous used-book library and cafe so if you can’t quite bring yourself to leave then grab a coffee and soak up the atmosphere.

Be prepared to want everything in the shop…
